As a Geophysicist within the Earthquake Science Center some of your specific duties will include:
Plans or organizes preparation of requirements and specifications for monitoring systems to include overseeing geophysical instrumentation, data acquisition, processing, archiving and retrieval activities for a complex, multi-station monitoring network with hundreds of channels of continuous seismic, geodetic or other geophysical data.
Participates in data processing and analysis, including compiling data from multiple instruments and instrument types, checking data for anomalous values and errors, and preparing derived data products.
Designs and implements geologic, geophysical, and/or geochemical studies.
Analyzes seismic, geodetic or other geophysical data in context of other data streams; participates in geophysical data analysis to improve forecasting strategies.
Develops projects internal to the bureau or through partnerships with other agencies utilizing and synthesizing geophysical data to effectively respond to land and resource management and to societal issues.
Operates a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.
Physical Demands: During emergency response periods, training of personnel on new equipment, or field work, the scientist may be expected to hike distances of several kilometers over uneven terrain while carrying equipment. Field work may require the use of proper personal protective gear, working in dusty, hot, humid, and extreme cold environments, occasional off-road driving of 4-wheel drive vehicles, traveling to remote field sites in helicopters or small fixed wing planes, and/or boats. Lifting of equipment and objects weighing up to 20 kilograms may be necessary.
Work Environment: Field work may occasionally also involve encounters with snakes, bears, and other wilderness dangers. International field work may be conducted in culturally hostile areas. Note: Positions involving field work under arduous conditions and those involving on-site emergency response require a pre-employment medical examination to ensure the applicant can perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position, with or without accommodation.

Qualifications
BASICEDUCATIONREQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geophysicist, all grade levels. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.). **OR
B. A combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-12:
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in geophysics that is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service.
Examples of such experience include planning and executing complex geophysical studies, which usually involved intensive investigations into recognized phenomena. This work would have typically involved conventional methods & techniques though it required going beyond clear precedents, and required adapting methods to the problems at hand and interpreting findings in terms of their scientific significance. At this level, Geophysicists have a very good knowledge of the principles of geophysics and their application, and the ability to independently perform scientific work of considerable difficulty.
