Summary

The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity. The duties may include, but are not limited to:
Uses GIS software to create, prepare, and manage geographic data from a variety of sources, produce map products, and perform GIS analyses.
Work with employees from Science and Technology offices and other government agencies on GIS-related projects and establishes effective communications to facilitate effective data management, visualization, and delivery.
Delivers basic GIS training and technical support to staff members.
Actively involved in creating and updating existing GIS files, collecting and converting digital data, and determining and documenting the most appropriate method for data integration.
Editing spatial data to effectively update and organize large quantities of data.
Creating map products using standard map design and cartographic principles.
Using ArcGIS geoprocessing, spatial analyses, modeling and cataloging tools to prepare maps, graphs and summary reports.
Communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing, for the purpose of creating training sessions and materials, fact sheets and project documentation.
Distinguishing between valid and invalid information and adjusting, adding, and removing digital cartographic detail within allowable limits with supervisors help.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
BASIC REQUIREMENT: Degree: cartography; or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e., college level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites).
OR Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in cartography, or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography, and/or directly related science, and related mathematics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
FOR THE GS-07 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower level that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
Knowledge of GIS methodology and associated ESRI ArcGIS software.
Ability to edit spatial data to effectively update and organize large quantities of data.
Skilled in creating map products using standard map design and cartographic principles.
Ability to use ArcGIS geoprocessing, spatial analyses, modeling and cataloging tools to prepare maps, graphs and summary reports.
Skill in communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing, for the purpose of creating training sessions and materials, fact sheets and project documentation.

OR 1 year of graduate-level education in Cartography or Geographic Information Systems.
