Duty 1: Perform cultural resource data reviews, field investigations, reporting, and impacts and effects assessments (i.e. evaluations of management/preservation of National Historic Trails and Tribally Sensitive Sites).
Duty 2: Develops methods to avoid, minimize, mitigate adverse effects on historic properties by verifying compliance with Section 106 for Minerals and Natural Resource related land use planning.
Duty 3: Utilize National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA), National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA), and BLM Resource Management Plan (RMP) and Record of Decision (ROD) guidelines.
Duty 4: Assists with ensuring federal agency due diligence with respect to State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).

Qualifications

Basic Requirements Education - 3 semester hours in each of the following course areas:
History of archeology (3 semester hours)
Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa (3 semester hours)
Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development (3 semester hours)
Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques (3 semester hours)
Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work (3 semester hours)
-AND-
6 semester hours total combination of related course work in:
Geography, geology, or cultural geography
History, historiography, or historical archeology
Environmental studies
Scientific writing (nonfiction English composition) and/or
surveying
AND-
Completed Archeological field school

Related Curriculum:
Degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics)
Degree in history, American studies, or a related discipline (may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in 1a, 1b, and including 1c described above).

Combination of Education and Experience - College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in "Education" above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.

Experience
Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology.
The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school.
Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials.
Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.
GS-07, Must meet ALL basic requirements -AND- must have a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade (GS-05) -OR- one-year experience equivalent to complexity of the next lower grade (GS-05) -OR- 1 year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement.
Specialized Experience includes but not limited to knowledge of the principles, concepts, theories, and methods of archeology. Experience participating in cultural resource inventories. Knowledgeable of applicable policies, regulations, and federal laws relating to archaeology. Familiarity with Section 106 & 110 of the National Historic preservation Act, National Register of Historic places.
Superior Academic Achievement (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled.
GS-09 - Must meet ALL basic requirements -AND- must have a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade (GS-07) level -OR- one-year specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (GS-07) -OR- 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.
Specialized Experience includes but not limited to - Experience working as an archeological staff member, Work as a cultural resource expert, Work on an archeological dig, Writing archaeological reports, Using Geographic Information System (GIS) to plot data and create maps.
GS-11 - Must meet ALL basic requirements -AND- must have a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade (GS-09) level -OR- one-year specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (GS-09) -OR- 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
Specialized Experience includes but not limited to - Work as an archeologist, Work in the cultural resource field providing advice and guidance to team members, Writing and editing cultural resource reports, Reviewing the work of others, Independently evaluating and interpreting cultural resources, Working as a principal investigator or project manager on an archeological project, Working in a directly related field that included application of archeological principles, concepts and practices relating to management of cultural and historical resources, Work with an office or agency to coordinate, host, and lead consultation with multiple tribal governments.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including Volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Physical Demands - Field work routinely requires physical exertion, long periods of standing or walking over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces or mountainous terrain, recurring bending, crouching, stooping or reaching, using hand tools such as shovels, trowels, or screening devices, and lifting of moderately heavy items (up to 50lbs) such as equipment and samples.
