Summary

This is an Air Reserve Technician (ART) position. ARTs are part of the regular career civil service and enjoy all the benefits granted to Federal employees in the competitive civil service. In addition, ARTs are required to maintain their active membership in the AF Reserve unit where assigned. ARTs receive on average one weekend of military training per month.

Duties

Help
  • The primary purpose of this position is to serve as an Air Reserve Technician (ART) aircraft ordnance systems mechanic.
  • Accomplishes scheduled inspections of egress systems.
  • Troubleshoots egress and jettison systems on operational aircraft and aircraft undergoing repair, overhaul, and modification.
  • Performs operational (or simulated operational) tests of egress and canopy jettison systems to ensure proper operation of all components using canopy blow testers, specialized test gauges, and push/pull spring scales.
  • Complies with safety requirements and complies with security regulations, directives, and policies .
  • Certifies work produced under the USAF Technical Order Program.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the 6600 Armament Work Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is the ability to perform the duties of an Aircraft Ordnance Systems Mechanic without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  1. Ability to use special and standard test equipment, gauges, and hand tools; knowledge of a variety of technical data such as manufacturer's handbooks and specifications, technical orders, operating instructions and special instructions relative to explosive or incendiary device and safety precautions related thereto.
  2. Knowledge of egress and jettison systems used on assigned aircraft and the practices, methods, and processes necessary to test, troubleshoot, inspect, modify and repair them; knowledge of shop mathematics.
  3. Knowledge of electrical and mechanical principles associated with egress and jettison systems; ability to read and interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprints; knowledge of applicable personnel, manpower, time, and attendance, and budgeting instructions, guidelines, and requirements.
  4. Ability to follow budgeting directives, instructions, and procedures; ability to maintain good memory skills, good judgment, and ingenuity; skill in mental application required to plan and lay out work, to maintain alertness and concentration, or to maintain a certain degree of muscular and visual coordination.
  5. Knowledge of safety and security requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations and technical orders; knowledge of tool, equipment, and materials accounting and security.
  6. Knowledge of USAF Technical Order Program and its procedures; ability to clean work area and/or job site upon completion of work.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS:
This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position. The incumbent's regular assignments are ART duties; however, the incumbent may be assigned some non-ART duties, generally not to exceed 30 percent of total responsibilities. May be required to fly in commercial and military aircraft to perform temporary/permanent duty assignments.

Hours of climbing, legs only are 8 hours/week. Climbing, use of legs and arms. Both legs required. Operation of crane, truck, tractor, or motor vehicle. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Near vision correctable at 13 inches to 16 inches to Jaeger 1 to 4. Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other. Both eyes required. Depth perception. Ability to distinguish basic colors. Ability to distinguish shades of color. Hearing (aid permitted). If it can be otherwise accommodated, a specific physical condition or impairment will not automatically disqualify a candidate.

Tax Law Impact for PCS: On 22-Dec-2017, Public Law 115-97 - the "Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017" suspended qualified moving expense deductions along with the exclusion for employer reimbursements and payments of moving expenses effective 01-Jan-2018 for tax years 2018 through 2025. This is an Air Reserve Technician (ART) position. ARTs are eligible for 15 days active duty tour each year for which military leave is granted with full civilian pay. Air Reserve units and members; are subject to immediate call to active duty in mobilization to meet a national emergency. Retired military that have active AF Reserve assignments may apply provided they show assignment (position) on the application.
