Summary

Serves as Chief, Aircraft Pilot in the Aviation Safety Office at NASA/Johnson Space Center (JSC), Houston, Texas. Responsible for directing the overall aviation safety program for JSC and the Aircraft Operations Division. Advises and supports line management within Flight Operations Directorate on aviation, ground, and industrial safety issues. The Aviation Safety Office promotes aviation safety measures and uses all resources available to promote mishap prevention.

Help
  • Stays up to date on and advises aircraft safety techniques and activities and is responsible for designing, maintaining, updating, and managing a comprehensive aircraft safety program.
  • Advises the Director of the Flight Operations Directorate, on the adequacy of airfield facilities, aircraft, procedures for aircraft support personnel, and aircraft operations safety policies.
  • Reviews and analyzes aircraft accident/incident reports for findings, trends, and other accident prevention information.
  • Assists in the investigation of aircraft accidents by reviewing accident information, and takes necessary action to prevent recurrence or avoid unsafe situations.
  • Reviews and analyzes flight test plans for safety and participates in Test Readiness Reviews and Operational Readiness Reviews for flight test programs.
  • Coordinates aircraft safety activities with other NASA Headquarters elements and field centers.
  • Evaluates test parameters, performs flight and/or ground simulations of advanced missions and aircraft, and participating in the development, design, testing, evaluation, and reporting on new aircraft concepts and advanced aircraft systems.
  • Performs pilot duties and conducts aircraft and space hardware test programs on NASA research aircraft, as well as for flight test programs, training flights, and various space flight simulation studies.
  • Maintains proficiency in different aircraft and demonstrates capability to handle all types of in-flight and ground emergencies.
  • Participates in aircraft and experimental flight test activities, and determines aircraft flight readiness.

Qualifications

You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for GS-15,you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level such as; flight instruction, air traffic control procedures, aviation safety regulations, policies, techniques, reporting requirements, and FAA regulations; experience utilizing ground simulations, development, design, testing, evaluation, and reporting for new aircraft concepts and new advanced aircraft systems; experience research piloting skills of high performance, complex aircraft; flight instruction experience including knowledge of instructional principles and techniques; planning and coordinating aircraft mission and evaluation projects, with an emphasis on safety; experience as an instructor pilot in at least one of the following NASA aircrafts: T-38N, WB-57F, Super Guppy Transport, Gulfstream 3, or Gulfstream 5.
