Help

As a Geophysicist within the Volcano Science Center some of your specific duties will include:

  • Independently identifies, evaluates, and determines equipment needs for maintenance and expansion of the existing Rainier Lahar Detection System Network.
  • Plans, organizes, and monitors station installations, maintenance, and network performance and responds to network outages. Monitors real-time data acquisition and ensures proper station documentation.
  • With the project manager and CVO Scientist-in-Charge, assembles annual spending plans and closely tracks spending to ensure the project is operating within budget and expenditures are accurately accounted for.
  • Participates in data processing and analysis, including compiling data from multiple instruments and instrument types, checking data for anomalous values and errors, and preparing derived data products.
  • Oversees the day-to-day operations of the real-time Mount Rainier Lahar Detection (MRLD) system. The detection system includes remote, autonomously-powered monitoring stations with one or more geophysical sensors, including seismometers, infrasound sensors, deformation monitoring equipment (GPS), tripwires and/or cameras.
  • Monitors operational status of the acquisition of continuously recording telemetered seismic and deformation monitoring networks on Cascade volcanoes, ensuring uninterrupted flow of data.
  • Operates a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.
These duties are described at the GS-12 level. For the GS-11 level, the selectee will perform a wide range of tasks described in the above duties, but at a lower level of work designed to further develop and refine the knowledge and skills of the individual.

Physical Demands: During emergency response periods, training of personnel on new equipment, or field work, the scientist may be expected to hike distances of several kilometers over uneven terrain while carrying equipment. Field work may require the use of proper personal protective gear, working in dusty, hot, humid, and extreme cold environments, occasional off-road driving of 4-wheel drive vehicles, traveling to remote field sites in helicopters or small fixed wing planes, and/or boats. Lifting of equipment and objects weighing up to 20 kilograms may be necessary.

Work Environment: Field work may occasionally also involve encounters with snakes, bears, and other wilderness dangers. International field work may be conducted in culturally hostile areas. Note: Positions involving field work under arduous conditions and those involving on-site emergency response require a pre-employment medical examination to ensure the applicant can perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position, with or without accommodation.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geophysicist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.). **OR

B. A combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

For GS-11:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level:

-Possess 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education (54 semester hours,81 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a Ph.D. degree in geophysics or other directly related field of study or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in geophysics or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

**OR Possess one year of appropriate professional experience in geophysics that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include performing a variety of geophysical observations, computations, compilations, and analyses in carrying out basic geophysical, seismic, or geodetic assignments to monitor volcanoes and associated surface phenomena such as lahars. Assists higher-level Geophysicists in carrying out more complex assignments. Examples include planning the installation of new geophysical monitoring equipment, obtaining permits; conducting data processing; analyzing data for errors and preparing derived data products.

For GS-12:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in geophysics that is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include performing a variety of geophysical observations, computations, compilations, and analyses in carrying out complex geophysical, seismic, or geodetic assignments to monitor volcanoes and associated surface phenomena such as lahars. Examples include extensive experience with geophysical methods and instrumentation to monitor volcanoes, including designing, operating and maintaining real-time digitally telemetered volcano monitoring networks and writing reports.
