Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) is the largest facility in VISN 9. TVHS is a tertiary integrated healthcare system comprised of two Medical Centers located in Nashville, TN and Murfreesboro, TN. There are nineteen (19) additional clinic locations located throughout Middle Tennessee and Kentucky. Locations include: Murfreesboro, Chattanooga, Tullahoma, Clarksville, Nashville, Dover, Cookeville, McMinnville, Columbia, Harriman, Athens, and Gallatin, in Tennessee; Bowling Green and Hopkinsville in Kentucky. Tennessee has NO STATE TAXES!!!The AC Equipment Mechanic's duties will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Operate a large variety of HVAC and refrigeration system such as walk-in, reach-in coolers, deep freezers, etc.
  • Operate and maintain refrigerant recovery equipment necessary to comply with EPA Clean Air Act, Agency regulation and Federal laws.
  • Operate multiple-zone air conditioning plants consisting of several centrifugal and air cooled chillers.
  • Operate refrigeration equipment for cold storage and ice making consisting of a variety of equipment.
  • Service all refrigerators, centrifuges, freezers, ice machines, etc.
  • Ability to operate computer systems in order to respond to alarms, abnormal readings and shut down equipment or systems to make repairs, correct problems and check for proper operation of alarms.
  • Assist with requested shut downs of HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems.
  • Start, stop and adjust various air conditioning equipment, as needed, in order to maintain required conditions of special areas.
  • Adjust, monitor and repair steam operated heat exchange equipment located in equipment rooms.
  • Performs preventive maintenance to include changing filters, cleaning strainers, lubricating and replacing broken drive belts on various equipment, preplacing electrical components. found to be defective such as motors, relays, capacitors, contractors, switches, thermostats and transformers.
  • Repair multiple pump and compressor systems such as primary and secondary chill water pumps, centrifugal and reciprocating chillers.
  • Maintain/ repair air distribution components including dual duct mixing boxes, variable air volume coxes, constant air volume boxes and direct control boxes.
  • Adjust and replace air conditioning heating and cooling systems and control systems.
  • Emergency troubleshoot and repair of multi-zone air conditioning equipment with all necessary fans, pumps, cooling towers and controls.
  • Account for refrigerants individually following EPA regulations.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections on HVAC systems and equipment to include associated fire alarms devices as required.
  • Repair steam driven heat exchangers associated with reheat systems.
  • Operate a large variety of HVAC and refrigeration system such as walk-in, reach-in coolers, deep freezers, etc.
  • Maintain and repair a variety of HVAC and refrigeration system such as walk-in, reach-in coolers, deep freezers, etc.
  • Repair and modify a variety of equipment and systems.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The physical requirement of this position involves the handling and carrying of tools, equipment and resting devices rarely weighing over 50 pounds. May use a platform and scaffolding equipment to repair hard to reach parts.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire, 'Ability to Do the Work of the Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic without More Than Normal Supervision' (Screen-Out Element). Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

  • Interpret Instructions, Specifications (other than blueprint reading)

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Lighting, heating and ventilation in work area. Incumbent is exposed to heat restricted ventilation and poor illumination in areas such as equipment rooms. Weather conditions to which exposed when working outdoors. Incumbent is exposed to all weather conditions when working outside (parking areas, roof, etc.) Temperatures to which exposed in the work area - Incumbent is exposed to varying climatic conditions from an office, to environmentally controlled space, to excessive heat in the boiler plant. Dust, grease, and soiling of clothing and skin surfaces - Incumbent is exposed to various hazardous materials during performing work assignments. He is provided protective clothing, equipment and safety devices for his personal protection. Noise and vibration - The equipment rooms are above the normal decibel rating and hearing protection is provided. Gases and fumes - Hazardous gases/fumes are in the work environment during various tasks. Respiratory protection is provided for the incumbent. Hazards in the working above ground level, on slippery surfaces or in crowded areas near moving equipment or cutting tools. Incumbent is at risk of injury from falls, burns, bruises and cuts. Incumbents works on tall ladders and scaffolds using dangerous power tools and occasionally is exposed to communicable disease while working in certain wards.
