Help

As a Supervisory Fish Biologist within the Great Lakes Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Responsible for managing both the science and facility portfolios of the Tunison Laboratory of Aquatic Sciences (TLAS).
  • Continues and expands strategic science aligned with USGS and Department of Interior (DOI) priorities in coordination with partners from DOI, Tribes, Canada, States, and nongovernmental organization stakeholders; guides development and review of study plans; and ensures a well-balanced science portfolio within the station with a thoughtful and strategic, well-aligned complement of high priority reimbursable science projects.
  • Directs and supervises station scientists and support staff in planning and assigning work priorities; develops performance standards and evaluates employee's performance, conduct, and safety; identifies training needs and develops training plans; interviews candidates for positions; and distributes and monitors resources.
  • Approves the station's research proposals; provides science quality and policy reviews of reports and manuscripts; leads staff in developing and implementing broad-scale, interdisciplinary science frameworks and research initiatives to address ecosystem questions on conservation biology and restoration ecology in aquatic systems; and represents GLSC at international meetings and other gatherings of Federal, Tribal, State, and academic partners.
  • Operates a government motor vehicle as an incidental driver.
Physical Demands and Work Environment: Field work requires considerable physical exertion such as walking, lifting, climbing, or bending in a potentially adverse or hazardous condition. Field or laboratory work requires adherence to safety procedures.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic requirement for Fishery Biologist, all grade levels.

A. Degree: major in biological science that included: at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology; and at least 12 semester hours or the equivalent in the animal sciences in such subjects as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, entomology, parasitology, ecology, cellular biology, genetics, or research in these fields. (Excess course work in aquatic subjects may be used to meet this requirement when appropriate).

B. Combination of education and experience-courses equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e. at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent), of which a minimum of 6 semester hours or the equivalent were in aquatic subjects and 12 semester hours or the equivalent were in the animal sciences, as shown in "A" above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope, and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

For GS-13:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in fishery biology that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service.

Examples of GS-12 level work may include: 1) Planning and coordinating fishery biology projects of considerable depth and/or breadth; 2) analyzing and interpreting fishery related project data with novel and obscure problems; 3) developing new or significantly modified biological techniques, methods, or criteria; 4) providing advisory, planning, or reviewing services as a technical specialist on a fisheries biological issue. For examples 1-4, the work provided wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
