This is a term appointment not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
As a Biologist within the Great Lakes Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
Participates in the planning and execution of studies and investigations concerning fishes, invertebrates, algae, and physical habitats of the Great Lakes; conducts routine field experiments; and deploys remote-data collection systems.
Performs assignments in planning the approach and collecting data; analyzes data; and writes reports of findings.
Organizes and implements biological investigations that affect fishery resources and their habitat conditions and prepare reports.
Gathers, organizes, and interprets a wide variety of biological, ecological, or other information pertinent to scientific investigations; develops and maintains computer databases; and analyzes, tabulates, and summarizes scientific data.
Operates a government motor vehicle as an incidental driver. Operates and maintains boat that is less than 26 feet in length.
Performs scuba diving when collecting samples.
Performs Crewmember duties while onboard large vessels.
Physical Demands: The incumbent must be physically capable of performing duties safely and efficiently while onboard large vessels. Crewmember duties on large vessels are physically demanding and can be arduous and/or hazardous in nature. Work includes walking over wet, rough, or rocky surfaces; bending; lifting climbing; crouching; reaching; or similar activities in performing your duties. Must be certified SCUBA diver.
Work Environment: The work is performed in the office, laboratory, or field environment onboard vessels. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. As Crewmember, you will be working in cramped spaces on rolling vessels in sometimes in-climate weather, maintaining balance and stability on a moving deck, donning an exposure suit unassisted, stepping over doorsills of 24 inches in height, opening and closing heavy watertight doors and hatches, pulling/lifting/bending/carrying/pushing heavy objects while maintaining balance on unstable surfaces, climbing steep stairs or vertical ladders without assistance, participating in fire-fighting/lifesaving/abandon ship drills and responding during emergencies, use of survival equipment, and lifting/controlling fully charged fire hoses. Special safety precautions are required in many cases.
Salary:
GS-07: $47,967 (Step 01) to $62,359 (Step 10)
GS-09: $58,673 (Step 01) to $76,274 (Step 10)
NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
This position is subject to both pre-employment and random drug testing as a condition of employment. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test is received.
Must be able to obtain and maintain DOI's Motorboat Operator Certification Course.
Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

Qualifications
BASICEDUCATIONREQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.
A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.
For GS-07:
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-07 level:
Possess 1 year of successfully completed graduate level education (18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) in biology or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
**OR Possess Super Academic Achievement based on undergraduate study.
**OR Possess one year of appropriate professional experience that is in or related to the duties of this position is qualifying if it is equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position.
Examples of GS-5 level experience could include: making laboratory determinations of water quality parameters on biological samples; applying biological concepts and basic principles in related natural science fields; collecting basic field investigation data; preparing and operating equipment that collects samples and biologic data; preparing samples; and analyzing, compiling and computing biological data. The tasks performed at this level were routine and usually entailed readily identifiable phenomena and environmental conditions; and the work was closely controlled and assigned with clear, specific, and detailed instructions as to the methods, procedures, and guidelines to use.
**OR Possess a combination of successfully completed graduate level education, as described above, and professional experience, as described above.
For GS-09:
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:
**Possess a Master's or equivalent graduate degree in biology or other directly related field of study or 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or other related disciplines if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.
**OR Possess one year of appropriate professional experience in biology that is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service.
Examples of GS-07 level work may include: 1) assisting with planning, organizing, and implementing scientific investigations; 2) performing data analyses on portions of larger scientific investigations; 3) and receiving training in gathering, organizing, and interpreting biological, ecological, pathological, public use, or other information pertinent to scientific studies and/or scientific investigations. For examples 1-3, the work involved following established methods and procedures, or detailed instructions; using some judgment in applying basic principles and procedures; solving minor problems and making routine decisions.
**OR Possess a combination of successfully completed progressive graduate level education, as described above, that is beyond the first year of graduate study and professional experience, as described above.
