This position is located in the Carpenter Shop. The Carpenter uses highly skilled techniques to construct, install, repair, and modify wood, metal and wood substitute structures, items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness. They construct and repair a wide variety of structural items such as: wood or metal building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases.

Installs and maintains the following: wood or metal doors, door frames, windows, and window frames.

Installs and repairs the following: floor tile, cove base, metal and wood wall studs, drywall, interior and exterior trim and miscellaneous items such as window glass, acrylic glass, workbenches, counter tops, bookcases, equipment cabinets, computer consoles, acoustical ceilings, signage, and items requiring limited decorative trim and molding.

Ability to install, repair or modify pictures, bulletin boards, various hospital dispensers, sharps containers, lockers, cabinets, countertops, chairs, shelves, and other items as assigned by supervisor.

Assembles items with variety of joining techniques such as mortise and tenant, miters, rabbets, and dados.

Uses glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces, veneers, and counter tops.

Uses wood, plastic, rubber, metal and composite materials when installing or replacing interior partitions, flooring, panels, suspended ceilings, counter tops, and moldings.

Assemble and disassemble modular wall partitions and furniture from various vendors.

Interpret drawings, blueprints, and specifications independently and determine the layout and work sequences and types of lumber or special related materials to be used.

Plan and carry out projects from initial layout to completion.

Accuracy, space, fit, structural soundness, and finished appearance are essential.

Installs, maintains and repairs al fire door closures which are electronic and mechanical in nature in all areas of the hospital.

Ability to perform painting duties, tasks and assignment.

Knowledge of metal, wood and wood substitute materials, and construction techniques. They are skilled in the operation of general and precision carpentry and woodworking equipment and are able to produce finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions, and acceptable appearance.

Measure for layout such as those required to construct footings for structural foundations and construct concrete forms and related structures with little or no supervisory guidance.

Interpret complex instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes.

Advanced shop mathematics to plan, compute, and lay out more complex and exact projects with features such as arcs, tangents, and circles.

Skilled in setting up and operating the full range of industrial woodworking and related machinery such as routers, band and scroll saws, and drill presses.

Skill in operating and using power and hand tools and other woodworking equipment such as portable drills, jointers, sanders, routers, power activated nailers, screw fasteners, drill presses, and table saws. They also have skill in setting up and adjusting stationary power equipment by checking and adjusting, for example, the "squareness" of the blade on a radial arm saw in relation to the surface of the cutting table.

Performing routine maintenance on equipment such as lubricating machines, changing and sharpening blades, and adjusting drive belt tension and able to cut bevels, rabbets, chamfers, grooves, and compound miter joints, and apply plastic laminates to wood and other surfaces on counter tops, cabinets, desktops, and tables.

This description is not all inclusive. Other related duties will be assigned.

NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not to exceed 2 years). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration of more than 1 year, but not more than 4 years and are subject to a 1 year trial period. Should the need warrant, term appointments may be extended without further competition up to a maximum of the 4 year limitation. The appointment to a term position does not confer eligibility for promotion, reassignment, or transfer to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.

Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage.

Work Schedule: The tour of duty for this position is typically, Monday through Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm. (Schedule may change based on the needs of the service). Additional information may be provided during interview process.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality that demonstrates your ability to do the work of a Carpenter without more than normal supervision. Such experience includes: Reading, interpreting, and applying building plans, specifications, blueprints, sketches, and building codes of all types; able to execute carpentry assignments completely and with a high degree of quality; responsible for project layout and work to project completion. (Your experience must be detailed in your resume to receive full credit.) Physical Requirements: The incumbent works in the wood shop and at job sites. They stand for extended periods of time while operating machines such as bench planes, saws, and drill presses. The work requires considerable bending, kneeling, and stooping. When at a job site, strenuous physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy and bulky materials such as sheets of plywood, framing members, and other building and construction materials, Carpenters use manual or portable power tools for extended periods in uncomfortable positions. On-site work typically requires bending, stooping, crawling, and climbing on ladders, scaffolding, and rooftops. Carpenters may lift and move materials up to 40 pounds, unassisted, and occasionally lift heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other help.

Working Conditions: The incumbent is exposed to a full array of weather conditions. They are subject to danger of falling when working from ladders or hydraulic lifts and are exposed to dust and dirt while mixing mortar and handling materials. Work is performed in all areas of the hospital environment, inside and outside. Work is often dirty, dusty and greasy. The incumbent is subjected to such hazardous conditions as injury from power driven tools, falling from scaffolds and ladders, temperature extremes, noise, and bad weather conditions. He/she is frequently exposed to the possibilities of cuts, bruises, scratches, broken bones, and burns. He/she may be subject to asbestos exposure and chemicals which can cause burns or irritation to the skin. Some duties may require incumbent to wear protective equipment and clothing that is heavy and uncomfortable.
