Summary

The Lead Medical Supply Technician Sterile Processing, works in support of the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) management team.
Distributes and prioritizes workload among employees in accordance with established workflow and/or job specializations. Assures an even workflow and distribution of the workload. Revises work schedules to meet anticipated and unanticipated changes in the workload. Assigns work to staff based on experience and training needs. Monitors and reports on the status of work.

Help

Major duties include:

  • Works in support of the sterile processing service team.
  • Keep in touch with the status and progress of work, and make day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities, obtaining assistance from the supervisor on problems that may arise.
  • Responsible to practice in a professional manner the necessary leadership in representing, promulgating and enforcing the standards of quality assurance, infection control, JCAHO and other regulatory agencies.
  • Distribute and balance the workload among employees in accordance with established workflow or assure timely accomplishment of the assigned workload and assure that each employee has enough work to keep busy.
  • Identifies needs of surgical supplies and RME to prepare surgical case carts. all items placed in a chart must be examined for package integrity per VA and AAMI guidelines.
  • Utilizes patient specific pick list to accurately gather surgical instruments and disposable supplies requested by attending surgeon or other Peri-Operative representatives.
  • Inspects items during the pick process to ensure package integrity remains intact, package is within expiration date, in substitutions are appropriate.
  • Assigns work, including overtime, disagreeable or choice tasks, etc., equitably among employees.
  • Determine and direct decontamination staff in the correct use method for decontamination of medical instruments.
  • Maintains current knowledge and answers questions of other employees relating to procedures, policies and directives.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 6:30am-3pm; 8am-4:30pm; 9am-5:30pm; 11am-7:30pm (Rotating shifts)

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

(NOTE: This applies to the past, current, and upcoming VA Health Professional Trainees (HPT) only. HPT is an individual appointed to temporary positions in one or more VHA medical facilities performing clinical or research training experiences to satisfy program or degree requirements or receiving VA Health Professional Scholarship Program. HPTs can be either VA-paid or Without Compensation (WOC).)

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Experience: Six months of experience that demonstrates your ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or
  • Education: One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position (copy of transcript required); or
  • Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education; or
  • Grandfathering Provision: Current Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) employed in VHA on or before July 8, 2015 (copy of most recent SF-50 required).
  • English Language Proficiency: Medical Supply Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA policy.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations:
Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)This position requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-6. Examples of specialized experience includes:
  • Receives contaminated critical and semi-critical RME in the decontamination area and may receive noncritical equipment in the decontamination area as well.
  • Disassembles the RME and determines the correct cleaning method, such as but not limited to ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washers, cart washers in chemical cleaning / decontamination agents, as determined by manufacturer instructions.
  • Inspects, assembles and determines the correct method and packaging for sterilization such as but not limited to steam, Sterrad, Steris, ETO , and high level disinfecting scope processors.
  • Performs and documents daily operational checks and records for all sterilization equipment.
  • In-depth knowledge of sterilization in cleaning equipment.


Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.
In addition to meeting the basic requirements and specialized experience., candidates must demonstrate the following KSAs:
  1. Ability to instruct staff on the correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments.
  2. Skill in communicating with staff to ensure compliance with written directives, rules and regulations.
  3. Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.
  4. Knowledge of sterility principles in order to instruct staff on decontamination procedures.
  5. Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-7.

Physical Requirements: The work is performed in various settings: decontamination, preparation, and clean sterile supply (preparation). You may be required to work in areas that are hot, cold, drafty and poorly lighted. You are subject to the possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, and other injuries from material handling equipment. The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds.) The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating, disassembly and assembly of instrumentation.
