Summary

This is a term appointment with an initial duration of 13 months. Extensions are possible up to four years.

This position is located on the Northern Region, Dakota Prairie Grasslands, on either the McKenzie or Medora Ranger District, and is responsible for providing technical support to the heritage resources staff as part of the Great American Outdoors Act initiative.

Duties

Help
  • Analyze archeological data in preparing reports.
  • Compile and report information about the nature and extent of known cultural resources.
  • Adapt ground search strategies as determined by specific project requirements i.e., terrain, vegetation cover, and time frames.
  • Ensure that archeology work assignments are carried out in safe, timely manner according to established standards and procedures.
  • Apply scientific methods to survey parcels of land to determine likely sites of archeological interest and prepare Cultural Resource Inventory reports and site forms.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

For the GS-07 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6); OR one full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as: anthropology, archeology, or history); OR combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

Specialized experience is defined as performing ALL of the following:

  • Monitoring archeological projects to ensure sufficiency of on-site surveying and recording; AND
  • Preparing reports, such as cultural resource inventories, that document project's environmental and cultural backgrounds, methodologies, and findings; AND
  • Identifying and recording on maps or aerial photographs the exact locations and and orientations of artifacts found.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Initial duration for this TERM appointment will be 13 months and may be extended for up to 4 years based on workload and funds availability.
