  • The employee performs assignments requiring the application of fundamental principles, concepts, techniques, and guidelines in the area of audit.
  • Plans, coordinates, conducts, and reports audit results when there is ample precedent for the work covered by the audit assignment.
  • Selects a course of action from many alternatives in planning an approach, gathering data, and presenting findings depending on the nature and extent of problems encountered.
  • Identifies and analyzes conditions and elements in work environments characterized by systems, functions, and controls for programs that are stable, pertinent issues are known; few conflicts in interpretation of conditions observed; and factual interrelationships are not always obvious or require treatment that varies depending on the subject matter.
  • Participates as a member of an audit team, progressively contributing more value to assigned audit projects as knowledge, skills, and abilities develop.
  • Travel required, may be up to 50%.

Qualifications

The Auditor (0511) occupational series requires:

  • A Bachelor's degree in accounting or auditing, or a degree which included 24 hours in accounting. The 24 hours may include up to 6 hours of credit in business law (transcripts required)
  • OR certification as a Certified Public Accountant or a Certified Internal Auditor, obtained through written examination;
  • OR (c) 4 years' experience in accounting, auditing, or a related field.

To be considered for the GS-9 level you must have at least one (1) year of experience conducting financial, program and/or performance audits in accordance with Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of programs, functions, and operations. Postal Service specialized experience may be substituted for the 1 year of experience.

Evaluation Factors
A resume review and 2-part structured Interview will be conducted for the top rated applicants to validate your experience meets the critical general competencies at the minimum proficiency level. Part 1 will include a 1-way video interview. For part 2, top rated candidates may be invited to participate in a panel interview. Please ensure your resume contains examples of your knowledge, skill or ability in the following areas:
  • Knowledge of audit concepts, principles, and methods sufficient to work independently using conventional procedures and practices
  • Knowledge of agency programs and their governing statutes, regulations, and practices sufficient to perform audit assignments to include field work using Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards.
  • Ability to work independently on routine or continuing assignments.
  • Ability to write communications that convey concise and comprehensive information on matters of a complex nature which are appropriate for the targeted audience and require minimal editing.
  • Ability to work effectively (independently or within teams) across functional areas in a professional and collaborative environment.

Career Advancement Opportunities
The USPS OIG uses a Pay Banding system, which is equivalent to the Federal GS scale. Grade and salary determinations will be made based upon a candidate's education and professional experience. This position is being advertised at the Journey Band level, equivalent to a GS-7/9. The salary range for this position is $49,157.00 to $78,167.00 per year. The salary figures do not include locality pay. Non-competitive promotion up to a GS-13 equivalent level is possible through our career ladder program.
