Duties

1. Teaches undergraduate students the scholarly research process using primary source materials; provides in-depth research support for students and faculty; partners with faculty to develop curriculum using special collections materials to enhance cadet learning. Identifies special collections materials that augment library-wide instruction initiatives per library strategic plan. Knowledge of complementary sources or other potential archival collections that may provide additional relevant materials.

2. Initiates and conducts research sessions (individual and in groups) using archives and special collections. Responds to research assistance requests by scholars, visitors, and external institutions which focus on Academy collections, particularly those of air power, manned flight, history and related subjects held in Special Collections. Maintains current knowledge of trends and changes in the library and archival professions and incorporates use of special collections in contemporary research practices at undergraduate-focused institutions. Pursues professional development opportunities including preparation of manuscripts that are appropriate for publication or presentation at relevant conferences.

3. Performs administrative functions as required. Interfaces with public service librarians or faculty instructors in the preparation and implementation of course material and content using archives and special collections. Serves on library and US Air Force Academy committees or task forces as appropriate. Works with US Air Force Academy stakeholders in the Center for Educational Innovation and cadet academic support units including the Academic Success Center and the Scholar's Program to enhance cadet learning. Represents the McDermott Library and participates in faculty governance by attending or leading departmental and faculty meetings as appropriate.

4. Coordinates development of various collections and user programs by establishing, enhancing, and maintaining relations with teaching faculty. Promotes use of special collections by the US Air Force Academy in programs that support exhibits, conferences, and publications. Develops, expands, and enhances current collections through judicious selection of purchases or gifts/donated materials. Coordinates with appropriate USAFA personnel to ensure historically important records are deposited with the archive to collect and preserve records. Works with Academy public relations agencies to provide services as needed. Works closely with the Friends of the Air Force Academy Library as the designated liaison. Leads or coordinates with other library staff or Academy entities to design and mount virtual or physical exhibits that support the US Air Force Academy mission.

5. Exercises supervisory personnel management responsibilities including setting expectations for work, prioritization of tasks, identifying applicable training opportunities, conducing performance reviews of direct reports, and furthering employee development. Engenders a positive work environment for direct reports and/or temporary employees.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: This appointment requires a PhD in a discipline that aligns with the US Air Force Academy undergraduate curriculum and US Air Force Academy archive holdings; a minimum of 3-5 years work experience in special collections or archives at an academic institution; demonstrated research services in special collections including teaching with special collections materials; and managerial/supervisory experience. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen.

ACADEMIC DISCIPLINES:
Doctorate in a discipline that aligns with the US Air Force Academy undergraduate curriculum and US Air Force Academy archive holdings or discipline appropriate for undergraduate archives that focus on history, air power, manned flight, archives, or similar. n.b., Under current academic promotion guidelines, a person selected for this position at the Assistant Professor rank may not have a pathway to the rank of Associate Professor.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
In addition to the required PhD, a Master of Library Science, Master of Library Information Science or equivalent from an American Library Association accredited institution is desirable along with Certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists
The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of best practices for special collection use in an undergraduate library including the integration of appropriate materials into contemporary curriculum and support of faculty in their own research. The candidate will have a strong background in using various digital formats and means to expand the reach of special collections to the larger scholarly world. The candidate will have demonstrated experience in translating institutional goals related to academic integrity and intellectual property into actionable outcomes to improve library instruction using materials held in special collections.
The candidate will have proven experience in teaching information literacy classes using materials from Special Collections and assessing the impact of instruction sessions to improve and enhance cadet learning. The candidate will demonstrate effectively working with and outreach to teaching faculty to highlight collections held in Special Collections and Archives. The successful candidate will have experience mounting displays, both physical and virtual, on topics of interest to the US Air Force Academy community. The candidate will have familiarity with creating and maintaining online guides to complement physical collections.
The candidate will serve as a key figure in planning efforts across the McDermott Library's initiatives in digital collections to raise the profile of Special Collections for use by the scholarly community in addition to faculty and cadets at USAFA. The successful candidate will have an understanding of metadata and schemas such as Dublin Core for purposes of making special collections materials searchable and accessible online.
The successful candidate will have strong verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills to work effectively with faculty, cadets, and researchers, be a self-starter, have the ability to multi-task and prioritize competing interests, possess a proven background in active use of special collections materials in undergraduate education.
The successful candidate is expected to show a record of professional engagement, including publications, and interest in continuing contributions to the library and archives professions through regional, national, or international forums via applicable committee work; presentations; or manuscripts of research findings suitable for publication and appropriate for academic libraries. The successful candidate will maintain current knowledge of trends and changes in the library and archives professions, especially in the effective use of special collections materials in undergraduate education.
The successful candidate will participate in faculty governance by serving on or leading McDermott Library committees and task forces. He/she will take a lead role in working with the Friends of the Air Force Academy Library to enhance the reputation of the US Air Force Academy Special Collections as a premier collection for the history of manned flight, air power, and military history.

FOREIGN EDUCATION:
Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the educational requirements. However, you must show proof that the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in a conventional U.S. education program. Tax Law Impact for PCS: On 22-Dec-2017, Public Law 115-97 - the "Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017" suspended qualified moving expense deductions along with the exclusion for employer reimbursements and payments of moving expenses effective 01-Jan-2018 for tax years 2018 through 2025.
