  • Duties described below are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.
  • Generates and executes human research studies, operational projects, and engineering evaluations, including scheduling, integration with stakeholders and collaborators, and decision packages.
  • Participates in Technical Interchange meetings and shares key findings via publication in high impact journals.
  • Prepares study documentation, including Institutional Review Board protocols, test plans, test readiness review packages, progress reports, etc.
  • Maintains knowledge of exercise countermeasure hardware, EVA hardware, and relevant in-flight operations; perform operational assessments as needed.
  • Monitors project schedules, deliverables and budget for Lab activities.
  • Interface with scientific and engineering collaborators (internal and external) to ensure successful completion of research studies and provide inputs/recommendations to relevant hardware design.
  • Develops and refines crew health and performance optimization algorithms and tools.
  • Represents and articulates diverse technical content of moderate complexity at management forums for decision, including updates to NASA standards and human health risks.
  • Assist in oversight of a moderate-large research laboratory, including oversight of technical, cost, schedule, and contractor team deliverables to various NASA Programs (consistent with risks).

Qualifications

In addition to the basic education requirement (shown below), you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level performing human health and performance research as a Principal Investigator (or Co-Investigator), including preparation of protocols for Institutional Review Boards; analyze research data and assimilate findings, including familiarity with statistical analyses; assist with proposal writing and preparation of technical reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and oral presentations for decision making; interfacing with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and/or medical doctors to resolve technical issues.

To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level leading and coordinating human health and performance research as a Principal Investigator (or Co-Investigator), including preparation of protocols for Institutional Review Boards; critically analyze research data and assimilate findings, including familiarity with statistical analyses; proposal writing and preparation of technical reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and oral presentations for decision making; leading a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and/or medical doctors to resolve technical issues and generate consensus recommendations and requirements.

Education

You must have successfully completed a bachelor's or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, or other field of physical science.
*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
