Duties

Help

As a Pharmacist with the NIH Clinical Center's Pharmacy Department, your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Providing pharmaceutical care to a complex, specialized patient population.
  • Actively collaborating with in-house staff and clinical researchers in the design and implementation of research protocols, collection of data, and in analysis and interpretation of results.
  • Monitoring active investigational studies to ensure policies concerning use of investigational drugs are being followed.
  • Serving as an authoritative consultant with direct interaction and communication with patients to obtain complete drug histories.
  • Designing, conducting and participating in drug utilization studies, audits and evaluations.
  • Serving as a pharmacy liaison with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other staff on units to resolve drug related problems.
  • Designing and conducting interdisciplinary educational programs in the area of drug therapy.
  • Interfacing with physicians in the design of drug treatment plans.
  • Evaluating drug literature in order to compare and contrast therapeutic regimens and uses for new and existing pharmaceutical products.
  • Researching and answering complicated drug information questions.

  • This position may require rotational shifts, nights, holidays, weekends, and on-call or call-back.
  • Due to frequent contact with patients, compliance with aseptic techniques, safety regulations, and Clinical Center policies and procedures are required.
  • Work may expose incumbent to infectious diseases; e.g. tuberculosis, and investigational drug therapy for which very little information is known.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

Education:

A doctoral degree in Pharmacy that is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

OR

Applicants who have a bachelor's degree in pharmacy may also qualify contingent upon an additional review of your qualifications.

Licensure:

You must also have an active, current license as a pharmacist in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Additional Qualification:

In Addition to the above, in order to meet the Minimum Qualifications for a Pharmacist, GS-660 position at the GS-12 level, you must have at least one year of professional pharmacy experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing inpatient pharmacy dispensing services; preparing sterile/non-sterile hazardous and non-hazardous products; identifying and preventing adverse drug reactions and interactions; ensuring correct labeling, handling and storage of pharmaceutical products; advising physicians on medication selection, dosing and administration; ensuring research protocol compliance with investigational drugs; providing oversight and training of technical support staff and managing the distribution of controlled medications.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

A combination of education and specialized experience that meets the qualification requirements for this position.
