Summary

We are seeking a scientist who will participate in, as well as, lead field studies and perform comparative planetology of volcanic features. The position requires the ability to perform research, lead teams, mentor students, and secure funding to conduct field studies. The incumbent will work on multiple teams, as a leader or as a team member.

  • Duties described below are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.
  • Develops, leads, and submits proposals to secure funding for personally performed research and any supported students/postdoctoral researchers.
  • Mentors students, from summer interns to post-doctoral researchers working alongside the incumbent; supports the career development of early career scientists, supports preparation of manuscripts, proposals, as as well as seeking employment.
  • Participates in, and leads field studies of terrestrial sites that serve as analogues of planetary surfaces; develops field campaigns, secures funding for such campaigns, and leads the identification of science goals for campaigns.
  • Performs analysis of scientific data, including but not limited to data from planetary missions, field studies of terrestrial sites, and models for the formation and evolution of volcanic terrains.
  • Presents research results at workshops and conferences, as well as publish results as peer-reviewed publications in journals.
  • Submits proposals to NASA research programs, announcements of opportunity, instrument development opportunities, and Goddard internal opportunities for funding. Supports proposals as a Co-Investigator for both Goddard-led and external proposals.
  • Supports NASA activities, including serving on review panels, supporting NASA events (both public and internal), action teams, and other requests from the Center or NASA HQ.
  • Works with Goddard scientists as well as colleagues outside of Goddard to build proposal teams to support funded research and field studies.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic education requirement (shown below), you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Vacant research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected. A review may be required to determine the appropriate grade level of the position and supplemental materials may be required from the selectee. Please keep this in mind when indicating the lowest grade you will accept.

To qualify at the GS-13 level, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the study of solid bodies, with a focus on volcanic activity on those bodies; conducting field studies through the sampling and analysis of volcanic material, and/or the deployment and use of field deployed experiments/instruments and; authored one or more publications in peer reviewed literature on planetary volcanism on the Earth and/or planetary bodies.

To qualify at the GS-14 level, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level serving as a subject matter expert and/or leading in the study of solid bodies, with a focus on volcanic activity on those bodies; serving as a subject matter expert and/or leading field studies through the sampling and/or analysis of volcanic material, and/or the deployment and use of field deployed experiments/instruments and; authored multiple publications in the peer reviewed literature on planetary volcanism on the Earth and/or planetary bodies

Education

You must have successfully completed a bachelor's or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, or other field of physical science.

*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
