You will serve as the Deputy Project Manager for EVA Space Suit Development, specifically the Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU), responsible alongside the Project Manager for the engineering management of the design, development, testing, verification, and certification of the Exploration EMU Space Suit. You will work with Project Manager to lead and mange project scope, budget, schedule, and technical performance through all project phases.
Summary

Current Johnson Space Center (JSC) federal employee serving on a career, career-conditional, Schedule A for individuals with disabilities, or NASA term appointment that provides eligibility to convert to a permanent appointment or a current NASA employee on a long-term rotational assignment to the NASA Engineering and Safety Center or the NASA Safety Center.
Assists the Extravehicular Office in strategic planning and system engineering product development.
Determines design parameters for contract tasks to be initiated in connection with the project. Conducts contract evaluation as needed.
Directs contractor engineering efforts through technical input to Contracting Officers to develop and document hardware configurations to meet NASA specifications.
Consults within NASA and contractor community on policy related to space suit system design, development, and operations.
Manages scope of work, creates and maintains project organization, identifies key personnel positions and allocates tasks /work content to successfully execute project plan.
Represents the project and branch, as delegated, to external customers and stakeholders for project planning and reporting. Provides regular customer reporting of cost, schedule, and technical status.
Responsible for the hardware certification, planning and implementation to flight for the xEMU space suit.
Supports and maintains a culture of safety in team development, hardware products, and lab operations.
Works with branch management from multiple divisions, directorate, and centers to coordinate lab and personnel needs as to support project goals.
Provides recommendations to the same concerning hardware and system readiness, position assignments and award nominations.

Qualifications
In addition to the basic education requirement (shown below), you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.
To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level that includes utilizing principles, practices and techniques of project management sufficient to lead a multidisciplinary team that interfaces with cross-organizational customers; performs engineering and project execution, such as budget, procurement/contractor developments and integration efforts; assist in the management of EVA components, systems, and ancillary hardware; project reporting to stakeholder management of a large-scale project on technical, cost and schedule status; experience in space vehicle and EVA systems, space suit components and human space flight operational requirements; and includes implementing EA hardware development and project processes.

Education
You must have successfully completed a bachelor's or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, or other field of physical science.
*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.
