MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level(s) in which you are applying:

Basic Requirement:

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.(Note: Acceptable experience may have been gained through geological field or laboratory work that provided a means of obtaining professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of geology and closely related sciences, e.g., geophysics, geochemistry, or hydrology. Such work generally must have involved making close observations, taking geological samples, handling various types of instruments and equipment, assembling geologic data from source materials, and analyzing and reporting findings orally and in writing. In some situations, professional scientific experience in other fields may be accepted in part as professional geological experience. Such experience must have been preceded by appropriate education in geology or by professional geological experience, and must have contributed directly and significantly to the applicant's professional geological competence. To receive credit for geological experience obtained in positions that are not full-time professional geological positions, the applicant is responsible for indicating clearly the actual time or percentage of time devoted to geologic duties within such positions, and for giving adequate descriptions of the geologic functions.)

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

GS-07
Specialized Experience: One or more full-time years (12-months) of specialized work experience, equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service, performing the following duties: assisting in preparing geologic analysis services for land use; assisting in geologic investigations plans and modifying investigations based on knowledge of geologic field; and providing assistance with sedimentation studies to determine sediment storage requirements.
OR
Education: One full year of graduate level education in an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in a field of study that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as geology. (MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS.)
OR
COMBINATION: Combination of graduate education and specialized experience as listed above. To determine your combination, first compute your experience as a percentage of the specialized experience listed above; then determine your education as a percentage of the graduate education listed above; then add the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent. (MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS.)
OR
Superior Academic Achievement: To qualify based on superior academic achievement, you must have completed the requirements for a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a field of study that demonstrates the competencies required by the position AND must meet one of the criteria below:

  1. A grade point average of "B" (a GPA of 2.95 or higher out of a possible 4.0) for all completed undergraduate courses, or those completed in the last two years of undergraduate study.
  2. A grade point average of "B+" (a GPA of 3.45 or higher out of a possible 4.0) for all courses in the applicant's major field of study, or those courses in the applicant's major completed in the last two years of undergraduate study.
  3. Rank in the upper one-third of the applicant's class in the college, university, or major subdivision.
  4. Membership in a national honor society (other than freshman honor societies) recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies. (TRANSCRIPTS are required)
GS-09
Specialized Experience: One or more full-time years (12-months) of specialized work experience, equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service, performing the following duties: conducting geologic investigations; assisting in creating written reports or interpretations of surface and subsurface conditions for land use determinations; and assisting in geologic investigations plans and modifying investigations based on knowledge of geologic field.
OR
Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, with major course of study in a field directly related to the work of this position, such as Geology.
OR
Combination: A combination of the specialized experience and graduate education as described above, such that they total 100% of the stated minimum qualifications for this specialty and grade. Only graduate education in excess of the first 18 semester hours may be used when combining education and experience for this specialty and grade. (TRANSCRIPTS are required)

GS-11
Specialized Experience: One or more full-time years (12-months) of specialized work experience, equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service, performing the following duties: performing geologic explorations and investigations on such things as foundations, wetlands, soils, etc. in an effort to support natural resources conservation projects; providing geologic analysis services for land use categories in assigned geographic areas; and performing geologic evaluation to specific systems such as well decommissioning, dam and spring development, and agricultural waste storage facility construction.
OR
Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Geology.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of the specialized experience and graduated education as described above, such that they total 100% of the stated minimum qualifications for this specialty and grade. Only graduated education in excess of the first 36 semester hours my be used when combining education and experience for this specialty and grade. (TRANSCRIPTS are required)

TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible.
One year at the GS-05 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07grade level;
One year at the GS-09 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirement for the GS-11 grade level
One year at the GS-11 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirement for the GS-12 grade level.

Additional information

If you are selected for a position with further promotion potential, you will be placed under a career development plan, and may be non-competitively promoted if you successfully complete the requirements and if recommended by management. However, promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applications will be evaluated in accordance with Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) Delegated Examining Procedures and USDA policy using category rating. Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans.
