Duties

Help
  • Proofread text and correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors
  • Verify factual correctness of information, such as dates and statistics
  • Check text for style, readability, and adherence to style guides
  • Rewrite text to improve clarity and readability
  • Review manuscripts for spelling, grammar, capitalization, punctuation errors, and correct as needed
  • Develop and maintain Word and InDesign templates, style sheets, and macros
  • Assess the quality of tables, charts, and illustrations for publication and adjust for clarity and applicability
  • Collaborate with senior editors throughout the production process and propose tools to improve editing processes
  • Research information using library electronic resources
  • Pose queries and suggest changes to authors
  • Manage and monitor the scope and progression of assigned articles/manuscripts

This position is being filled under the Direct Hire Authority for Post-Secondary Students and Recent Graduates.

Recent Graduate: a person who was awarded a degree by an institution of higher education not more than two years before the date of the appointment of the applicant. Exception: For a person who has completed a period of obligated service in a uniformed service of more than four years, the degree may be awarded by an institution of higher education not more than four years before the date of the appointment of the applicant.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant education and experience.

To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of specialized experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: 1) applying knowledge of grammar, writing, editing practices, style guides (including Chicago Manual of Style), and publishing production processes to copy edit/proofread manuscripts; 2) using current desktop publishing software (Word, InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat DC, and Adobe Illustrator) to develop electronic documents; 3) using content management systems to track projects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-07) or equivalent pay band.

Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work, such as Technical Writing, Technical Editing, Technical Communications, Digital Communications, Publishing, Professional Writing, English, or Journalism.

Combination of education and experience.

Successfully completed a Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work, such as Technical Writing, Technical Editing, Technical Communications, Digital Communications, Publishing, Professional Writing, English, or Journalism.
