Summary

This position is located on the Colville National Forest at the Three Rivers Ranger District in Kettle Falls, Washington.

The primary purpose of this position is to perform timber sale preparation; presale, sale administration and similar duties as part of the timber organization.

Duties

Help
  • The duties listed below are at the full performance level.
  • Prepares and executes a variety of conventional timber cruises and sampling methods to estimate quality and quantity of timber.
  • Determines sample cruise design, selects sampling methods, completes timber sale cruises to estimate volume by species, assembles statistical data, and summarizes results.
  • Gathers data for logging system analysis such as road access, skyline profiles, and landing location suitability.
  • Performs on-the-ground timber sale and cutting unit boundary layout considering such factors as accessibility, log-ability, stream protection, and visual management.
  • Traverses sale areas to collect unit acreage and other data for sale appraisals, logging plans, Knudsen-Vandenberg (KV) plans, Brush Disposal (BD) plans, and Erosion Control and Sale Area Improvement (SAI) plans.
  • Shows proposed sale areas to prospective purchasers, contractors or interested parties, and explains terms of sale and contract requirements.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-7 level
: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6).
Examples of specialized experience are: Utilized computer programs required for data collection, cruise processing, traversing, and GPS; Preformed aspects of timber cruising including tree measurements, map reading and compass use, species identification, defect recognition and determination, quality determination, traversing, use of aerial photos, and use of timber cruising tools and instruments; Utilized sampling systems such as 3P, fixed area, point, and sample tree.

OR

One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as Forestry, Natural Resource Management, and Forest Engineering).

OR

Combination of graduate level education in Forestry, Natural Resource management, Forest Engineering and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.


For the GS-8 level: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-7).
Examples of specialized experience are: Drafted timber cruise plans, performing lay out of timber sale boundaries; Summarized cruise and marking data for inclusion in reports describing timber quantity, resources, topographic features and timber marking guidelines; Prepared timber sale appraisals and contracts.

OR

Two full years (36 semester.54 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level education or master's degree if the coursework is directly related to the work of the position (such as Forestry, Natural Resource Management, and Forest Engineering).

OR

Combination of graduate level education in Forestry, Natural Resource Management or Forest Engineering (in excess of 18 semester/27 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Work Experience: Your resume must clearly document the following for each block of work experience; the beginning day, month and year the work assignment started and ended; the hours worked per week; position title, and series and grade if applicable; and description of duties performed.
