Duties

Help
  • Assist in methods and practices of materials engineering such as welding, heat treatment, nondestructive testing (NDT), surface restoration, and chemical and heat treatment of metals.
  • Interpret industrial operating polices and procedures relating to materials engineering productions.
  • Assist with functions and work processes in materials engineering production.
  • Maintain materials engineering production (such as welding, heat treatment, nondestructive testing (NDT), surface restoration, and chemical and heat treatment of metals) for an industrial operation.
  • Analyze functions and work processes in materials engineering production.
  • Provide material analysis to the Materiel Review Board.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.

GS-09: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting in engineering technical services in an industrial operation on metal fabrication, treatment, restoration and testing processes and procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

GS-10: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting in engineering technical services in an industrial operation that manufactures, modifies, repairs, and test mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment; and gathering data to conduct analysis of industrial shop processes and testing materials. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

GS-11: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes advising on materials processing, metal joining, surface repair, heat treatment and nondestructive test (NDT); assisting engineers with finding the root cause of material disposition and material process improvements; providing engineering technical services in industrial operation that manufactures, modifies, repairs, and test mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment; AND maintaining shop processes to modify, repair, join, treat, identify and test metals. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10).

GS-12: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes advising on materials processing, metal joining, surface repair, heat treatment and nondestructive test (NDT); analyzing the root cause of material disposition and material process improvements; ensuring the latest technologies and new methods are available to improve productivity, capability and quality of metallic materials; providing engineering technical services in industrial operation that manufactures, modifies, repairs, and test mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment; AND maintaining shop processes to modify, repair, join, treat, identify and test metals. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS:

GS-09: To qualify at the GS-09 grade level, this position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain TWO of the following certifications: 1) American Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ASNT) or National Aerospace Standard (NAS) 410 Level 2 qualification for Liquid Penetrant testing; 2) ASTN or NAS-410 Level 2 Magnetic Particle Inspections; 3) American Welding Society certification as either a Certified Welding Inspector, Certified Welding Educator, or Certified Welding Engineer; and 4) Letterkenny (or equivalent) certification for production Gas Metal Arc, Gas Tungsten Arc, and Shielded Metal Arc welding of common steel, stainless steel and aluminum. The remaining certifications that are not possess, the incumbent is require to obtain and maintain those certifications within 24 months of being appointed to this position. (NOTE: You must attach copies of your certifications with your application.)

GS-10: To qualify at the GS-10 grade level, this position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain ALL of the following certifications: 1) American Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ASNT) or National Aerospace Standard (NAS) 410 Level 2 qualification for Liquid Penetrant testing; 2) ASTN or NAS-410 Level 2 Magnetic Particle testing (MT); 3) American Welding Society certification as either a Certified Welding Inspector, Certified Welding Educator, or Certified Welding Engineer; and 4) Letterkenny (or equivalent) certification for production Gas Metal Arc, Gas Tungsten Arc, and Shielded Metal Arc welding of common steel, stainless steel and aluminum. This grade level also requires the incumbent to successfully complete two of five courses in the ASM (formerly the American Society for Metals) Heat Treating Certificate Program, or equivalent, within 18 months of being appointed to this position. GS-11: To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, this position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain ALL of the following certifications: 1) American Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ASNT) or National Aerospace Standard (NAS) 410 Level 2 qualification for Liquid Penetrant testing; 2) ASTN or NAS-410 Level 2 Magnetic Particle testing (MT); 3) American Welding Society certification as either a Certified Welding Inspector, Certified Welding Educator, or Certified Welding Engineer; 4) Letterkenny (or equivalent) certification for production Gas Metal Arc, Gas Tungsten Arc, and Shielded Metal Arc welding of common steel, stainless steel and aluminum; AND 5) Completion of 2 of the 5 courses in the ASM (formerly the American Society for Metals) Heat Treating Certificate Program, or equivalent. GS-12: To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, this position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain ALL of the following certifications: 1) American Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ASNT) or National Aerospace Standard (NAS) 410 Level 2 certification for Liquid Penetrant and Magnetic Particle Inspection; 2) American Welding Society certification as either a Certified Welding Inspector, Certified Welding Educator, or Certified Welding Engineer; 3) Letterkenny Army Depot (or equivalent) certification for production Gas Metal Arc, Gas Tungsten Arc, and Shielded Metal Arc welding of common steel, stainless steel and aluminum; AND 4) Completion of ALL courses in the ASM (formerly the American Society for Metals) Heat Treating Certificate Program, or equivalent. This grade level also requires the incumbent to successfully complete Level 3 of the first certification above within 24 months of being appointed to this position.
