Duties

As a PERSONNEL RESEARCH PSYCHOLOGIST at the GS-0180-14 some of your typical work assignments may include:

  • Serves as the Assistant Director of Research and Program Evaluation, and performs a broad range of duties related to planning, executing, guiding, translating, implementing, and measuring Public Health suicide prevention research initiatives and studies for Service members and their families.
  • Serves as a technical authority and subject matter expert (SME) of suicide prevention research projects and large-scale tracking of research and studies across the Department of Defense (DoD) and with our public and private partners to identify evidence-based efforts that are applicable to the culture and practices of the DoD.
  • Technical authority in negative outcomes research, experimental, quasi-experimental, qualitative, and complex sample survey design, weighting techniques, and advanced statistical techniques including structural equation modeling, logistic regression, multi-level modeling, and multi-group measurement equivalence.
  • Serves as a technical authority on research priorities and requirements for suicide prevention aligned with a public health approach, techniques and applications used to enhance suicide prevention efforts that are based on the statistical analysis of psychographic, demographic and/or geographic data, specifically serving as a subject matter expert in translation and implementation of studies and research, as well as the development of measures of effectiveness to determine the value of the various programs and pilot programs using logic models or similar approaches.
  • Conducts complex innovative research and survey development requiring a very high degree of professional expertise to resolve critical operational scientific problems. These problems are particularly complex and are characterized by multiple competing theories, limited empirical scientific knowledge, and/or a lack of proven research methodologies to address the problems through its various phases to completion.
  • Writes reports, papers, and prepares and delivers briefings that describe research and program evaluation for DoD leadership and other senior leaders, both for technical and non-technical audiences.- Coordinates and communicates suicide prevention matters with other DoD components, the Military Services, other Federal Departments, to include DoD-wide and inter-agency working groups and committees.

Qualifications


You may qualify at the GS-14, if you fulfill the following qualifications:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service:

  • Develops and implements non-clinical, suicide prevention research studies in line with the Public Health approach to suicide prevention, with expertise in various research methods.
  • Develops and conducts program evaluation development, design, implementation and translation of findings.
  • Conducts and oversees data analysis activities, with expertise in complex data analysis methods.
  • Coordinates and works with other components, the Military Services, and/or other government agencies, to include serving on cross-agency or inter-agency working groups/committees.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

In addition to meeting qualifications, your application package must reflect the applicable experience to meet the Individual Occupational Requirements for the 0180-Psychology Series.
  • Basic Requirements:
    Degree: major or equivalent in psychology for all specializations.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours that your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
