Summary

The Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) is seeking physicians (pediatricians, family medicine & ER physicians, general practitioners, etc.), nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, EMTs, & licensed vocational nurses to assist with the Unaccompanied Children who have entered the United States. Interested candidates can apply to volunteer as part of the HHS, Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), Unaccompanied Children Program (UC).

Duties

Help
  • Assess the medical needs of and triage unaccompanied children in care
  • Provide basic medical care to unaccompanied children
  • Assist Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and ORR staff in identifying children requiring prioritization for placement based on vulnerable category or time in CBP custody
  • Provide administrative and logistical support for the program

  • Possess a current, valid medical/nursing/NP/PA-C/EMT license from a U.S. state or territory
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national
  • Willing to undergo a childcare background check which will include collecting your fingerprints and a list of all your residences within the past five years
  • This is a volunteer assignment. Volunteers are requested to commit to at least one week (seven days) of volunteer service.
  • Must be willing to undergo daily temperature screening in order to gain access to some facilities if required at the facility
  • You must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Qualifications

To be considered for this volunteer opportunity, you must be a healthcare professional (i.e., doctor, nurse, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, emergency medical technician, or licensed vocational nurse) with a valid state medical, nursing, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, and/or EMT license.

Education

A valid, state medical, nursing, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, and/or EMT license is required.

Work Hours: Volunteers may be required to work evenings and/or weekends.

Deployment Duration: The minimum deployment is one week (seven days). You may volunteer for longer periods of time based on your availability. You may be asked to deploy within 48 hours of receiving all approvals.

Location: Facilities are primarily located along the Southwest U.S. border area, specifically Dallas, San Diego, San Antonio, and Ft Bliss. Locations will extend to other geographic areas according to the need.

Childcare Vetting Check: HHS may requirevolunteers to undergo a "Childcare" investigation, which includes specific checks, as provided in the Crime Control Act of 1990, originally codified at 42 USC 13041, transferred to 34 USC 20351.

Travel Expenses: All travel expenses related to the opportunity will be reimbursed by HHS/ORR. Travel will be paid in accordance with applicable government travel regulations.

Liability Insurance: We recommend you consult with your employer or liability insurance provider to determine if your existing coverage applies to this volunteer opportunity.

State Licensure: : In order to start volunteer service, medical volunteers must meet the licensure requirements (e.g., temporary or emergency licenses) for the state in which the ACF-ORR facility is located, and the Office of Refugee Resettlement identifies a staffing need for medical workers at that facility. Since many State medical boards have established processes to allow the provision of cross-border health care in emergency situations, we are working with the Federation of State Medical Boards to identify pathways for health care professionals to provide care in a State in which they do not have an active license. Specific details will be provided in advance of any assignment.
