Summary

This is a Temporary Appointment Not To Exceed (NTE) 12 months. Selected applicants will be assigned to the Mobile Vaccination Clinic.
Under the new SAVE LIVES ACT, we've been given an expanded charge to vaccinate as many individuals as possible. This team will travel to four CBOCs (Columbus-13th and Downtown; Monroeville; and Dothan) to vaccinate as many Veterans and their spouses/caregivers as possible. This is an open and continuous announcement.

The Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS) is a consolidated health care system that includes VA Medical Centers in Montgomery and Tuskegee Alabama as well as Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) in Dothan Alabama, Ft. Rucker Alabama, Monroeville, Alabama, Columbus Georgia and Montgomery VA Clinic. The incumbent will be required to work on site at the other locations as required.

Major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Provides information to customers regarding medical supplies;
  • Communicates to the Lead or Supervisor any concerns related to supplies, equipment and procedure
  • Monitors expiration dates, rotates stock to limit outdates and removes items from use as required by outdates;
  • Monitors and controls critical supplies;
  • Performs daily inventory using bar coding equipment on a predetermined schedule that will allow for timely replenishment;
  • Resolves differences between records and physical count of stock;
  • Distributes items according to established or ad hoc requirements in computerized inventory management systems;
  • Delivers supplies in a timely manner and ensures supplies and material delivered are in sterile and operational condition;
  • Completes specialty cart preparation;
  • Cleans assigned secondary areas in accordance with aseptic principles; and
  • Receives supplies and material into the medical center's catchment area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/30/2021.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Candidates may be advanced without time restriction to positions up to GS-5 if the position to be filled is no more than two grades above the lowest grade the employee held within the preceding 52 weeks under their latest non-temporary competitive appointment.

Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade, GS-04, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Providing supplies and material to clinical and administrative areas of a complex health care facility; Scanning, bar-coding, receiving, storing and distributing medical and surgical supplies, instruments and other material; Pulling stock, replenishing stock and maintaining records on stock levels; Monitoring expiration dates; Cleaning assigned areas in accordance with aseptic principles; Utilizing an automated system to maintain inventory; and Answers customer questions regarding supplies and materials.

  • Education: Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a Bachelor's degree, with major studies in or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related. NOTE: A copy of your transcript (official or unofficial) must be submitted with your application packet.

  • Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of education above high school and specialized experience at the GS-05 grade level for this position. One full academic year of study beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. The total percentage of education and specialized experience combined must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday, and frequent reaching, bending and lifting of supply packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds). Work requires pushing loaded carts of medical supplies (weighing in excess of 100+ pounds). With proper assistance, moves heavier items' weighing over 40 pounds.
