Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Superintendent, incumbent will serve as the Devils Tower National Monument (DETO), Chief of Visitor and Resource Protection (Chief Ranger). It is a dynamic and challenging position.
The Chief Ranger will serve on the park's leadership team and is instrumental in developing and implementing strategies to further the National Park Service and DETO mission.The incumbent leads and manages a broad and complex portfolio including a multi-fund source budget spanning three branches: fee and revenue program, a modern and progressive law enforcement program, and rock climbing management. Will manage special park use functions and permits to include First Amendment expression and commercial filming. Will serve as the senior law enforcement officer, providing leadership and supervision for law enforcement staff, ensuring program policy compliance, guide investigatory activities, develops and maintains a variety of interagency relationships and general agreements. Additionally, the incumbent serves as the park's structural fire coordinator and participates in wildland fire planning.
This is a required occupancy position, therefore Federal government housing is available and will be provided.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Duties and responsibilities require long work days and extensive travel by all modes of transportation. Incumbent should be in excellent physical and mental condition with considerable stamina in order to react to emergencies and law enforcement situations that arise. Position is required to meet and continuously maintain the physical/medical standards as set forth in the D.O. #57 requirements.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Incumbent works in a northern latitude area with temperatures ranging from 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer to -25 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter. Snow depths during the winter season may reach 2 to 3 feet, though typically are less. Elevation ranges from 3,000 to 5,000 feet.
AREA INFORMATION:
Devils Tower National Monument is the nation's first national monument. Located in Northeast Wyoming, it was set aside to preserve the 867 foot column of igneous rock along with prehistoric/historic cultural resources and the plants and animal life of the area.
The park is 1,347 acres with an elevation of about 3,800 feet. The climate is usually mild and typical of the Black Hills region. High temperatures can range from the mid-90s in the summer to the 50s in the spring & fall. The three closest communities are Hulett (nine miles), Sundance (28 miles), and Moorcroft (30 miles) which have basic services. The larger communities of Spearfish, SD and Gillette, WY are approximately 60 miles away with many services available.
