The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's role is to oversee various aspects of the energy industry, including transmission of electricity, natural gas and oil. We also analyze proposals to build liquefied natural gas terminals and interstate natural gas pipelines and license hydropower projects. To help support the modernization of the electric system here in the U.S., we are focusing on issues associated with a smarter grid. 

This position is located in the Office of External Affairs, Media Relations Division. 

The Media Relations Division works with the Chairman’s office and program office leaders to clearly communicate the Commission’s policies, actions and viewpoints to the news media and the public. The Media team does this through the Commission’s website, social media platforms, podcasts and videos, and through traditional methods of drafting news releases, convening news conferences and conducting interviews.  

The Media Relations team features the considerable talents of four news media professionals and three specialists trained in digital audio, video, graphics and web design and operations.


Major Duties for the Public Affairs Specialist:

-Develops and implements social media strategy, coordinating with stakeholders across the Agency to ensure its effectiveness and encouraging adoption of relevant social media techniques into the corporate culture and into all of the Agency's products and services.

-Develops a full range of public affairs programs with responsibilities which include but are not limited to writing and editing· substantive, specially tailored, or targeted information materials (news releases, special reports, fact sheets, briefing and background papers, feature articles, and portions of the Commission's Annual Report) to reach local, national, and international interest groups impacted by or having an interest in energy regulatory matters.

-Analyzes and evaluates information and program needs proposed for dissemination and submits recommendations to the Director, Media Relations and/or senior staff of the Commission regarding distribution of this data.

-Educates and informs the media and the public on Commission programs.

-Assists web posting team with posting content to FERC.gov website.
