Summary

This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service, Field Organization, Midwest Area,Soil Drainage Research Unit in Columbus, Ohio.

The Incumbent deals with facts, e.g., spots readings which are outside the normal range of tolerance or acceptability, or determines how best to present raw data.

This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 4 years.

Duties

Help
  • Applies basic soil science principles to participate in scientific experiments.
  • Records instrument readings, collects soil samples, and takes measurements to assist with soil physical, chemical, and biological analysis.
  • Assists in identifying and installing specialized soil sensors and equipment.
  • Assists in one or more phases of the soil science research process by performing a variety of standardized or routine duties, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment, common to the assigned area of work.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

General Experience: General experience is (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.

At the GS-04:
Qualifying experience for GS-4 includes 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-03 level, which is directly related to the work of this position and has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting soil science experiments in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse setting; collecting, recording, and analyzing scientific data; and operating and maintaining lab equipment.

OR

Education: Successful completion of 2 years of study above the high school level that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the position to be filled. Related courses may include Soil Science, Plant Science, Agronomy, Hydrology, Crop Science or Environmental Science.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.

At the GS-05
Qualifying experience for GS-05 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-04 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting experiments related to crops or soil; collecting, recording, and analyzing scientific data; and operating and maintaining lab equipment.

OR

Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled. Related courses may include Soil Science, Plant Science, Agronomy, Hydrology, Crop Science or Environmental Science.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.

Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking or bending. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of a work day) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination.

Work Environment: The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals or working outdoors. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves
