Summary

These positions are located in the  Forensic Science Laboratories  within the Office of Science and Technology, Laboratory Services, Forensic Science Laboratory Washington in Beltsville, MD.

The Firearm and Toolmark Examiner serves as an analyst in the examination of firearm and toolmark evidence from criminal investigations of firearm violations, bombings, and arsons.

Help

As an Firearms and Toolmark Examiner, you will:

  • Performing routine firearm and toolmark examination without technical guidance, using scientifically sound and applicable procedures.
  • Examining firearms for function testing and comparative examinations, serial number restoration, gunshot residue testing for muzzle to target distance determination.
  • Examining ammunition components, and comparative examination of firearm test specimens and ammunition components to determine if they share a common source.
  • Developing, examining and comparing firearms and toolmark evidence and maintaining working knowledge of other relevant areas of forensic science.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progresses.

Qualifications

Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:

  • Examination and comparison of handwriting, printing, typewriting, and other mechanical impressions in order to make determinations of identity or genuineness.
  • Analysis of inks, papers, and other recording instruments and materials by chemical, microscopic, and other methods in order to develop information useful in determinations of genuineness, integrity, security, origin, validity of date, or for restoration of mutilated or obliterated matter.
  • Specialized document photography and preparation of photographic exhibits to be used for court demonstration purposes, or supervision of such work.

To qualify for GS-11 candidates must also have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-09.

Specialized experience is demonstrated experience, which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. Experience must be in the normal line of progression or must be related to the work of the position advertised and must be reflected in resume.  Specialized experience includes: preparing written laboratory reports resulting from evidence examined in criminal investigations; performing applications involving the analysis, microscopic comparisons and identification of firearm test specimens, ammunition components,  processing of toolmark related evidence; performing serial number restoration; preserving evidence for laboratory analysis and comparisons.

The GS-11 salary range starts at $72,750.00.  If you are a new federal (civil service) employee, your starting salary will be set at the Step 1 for this position and the grade level for which you are selected.

Education

In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify for this position with Ph.D.OR equivalent Doctoral Degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field such as physical and biological sciences, graphic arts, police science, criminology, or law. OR LL.M., if related or equivalent degree that demonstrates the competencies needed to do the work of the position may be substituted for the experience required; OR a combination of education and experience as listed above.
