Duties

Help
  • The employee investigates and studies source pollutants, physical facilities and/or industrial plants to develop programs and methods to conserve natural resources and prevent, remediate or remove contamination in the environment.
  • Controls phases of projects or operations coordinating with other resource specialists and technicians as needed.
  • Areas of responsibility include some complex features, examples of which might include such duties as drainage basins, mine safety and closures, collecting and analyzing water samples.
  • Work is performed in office or field and may involve duties such as the following examples:
  • Control phases of projects or operations coordinating with other resource specialists and technicians as needed.
  • Assess adequacy of current practices and procedures and makes recommendations to improve results.
  • Survey field sites for facts and information for entry into databases and/or geospatial automated information systems in support of other functions in the office/offices that require technical understanding.

Qualifications

To Qualify for a grade 5 Physical Science Technician you must have 1 (one) full year of specialized experience (equivalent to at least the GS-04 level or pay band in the Federal service) that includes performing the following duties:assist with production verification and compliance inspections; assist with reports categorizing observations for review by supervisor; assist with categorizing and inventorying Abandoned Mine Land features, public dumping and hazmat sites; assist with organizing clean ups with appropriate personnel and equipment, utilizing satellite data for certain projects; and/or assist with organizing educational outreach to school age groups focused on rock identification and hands-on intro to earth science skills.

-OR-

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in an appropriate field of physical science, or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics.

-OR-

C. A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above.

To Qualify for a grade 6 Physical Science Technician you must have 1 (one) full year of specialized experience (equivalent to at least the GS-05 level or pay band in the Federal service) that includes performing the following duties::perform aspects of production verification and compliance inspections; write reports categorizing observations for review by supervisor; lead and support categorization and inventory of Abandoned Mine Land features, public dumping and hazmat sites; organize clean-ups with appropriate personnel and equipment, utilizing satellite data for certain projects; and/or organize educational outreach to school age groups focused on rock identification and hands-on intro to earth science skills.

The incumbent is responsible for investigating, measuring, and evaluating environmental conditions. He/she must review and analyze scientific data provided by other specialists, including hydrologists, geologists, biologists, range management planners, and other land use planners to properly assess and report on the status of various environmental conditions that could affect human health and the environment.
