    Responsibilities

    1. Teaches undergraduate students the scholarly research process using primary source materials; provides in-depth research support for students and faculty; partners with faculty to develop curriculum using special collections materials to enhance cadet learning. Identifies special collections materials that augment library-wide instruction initiatives per library strategic plan. Knowledge of complementary sources or other potential archival collections that may provide additional relevant materials.

    2. Initiates and conducts research sessions (individual and in groups) using archives and special collections. Responds to research assistance requests by scholars, visitors, and external institutions which focus on Academy collections, particularly those of air power, manned flight, history and related subjects held in Special Collections. Maintains current knowledge of trends and changes in the library and archival professions and incorporates use of special collections in contemporary research practices at undergraduate-focused institutions. Pursues professional development opportunities including preparation of manuscripts that are appropriate for publication or presentation at relevant conferences.

    3. Performs administrative functions as required. Interfaces with public service librarians or faculty instructors in the preparation and implementation of course material and content using archives and special collections. Serves on library and US Air Force Academy committees or task forces as appropriate. Works with US Air Force Academy stakeholders in the Center for Educational Innovation and cadet academic support units including the Academic Success Center and the Scholar's Program to enhance cadet learning. Represents the McDermott Library and participates in faculty governance by attending or leading departmental and faculty meetings as appropriate.

    4. Coordinates development of various collections and user programs by establishing, enhancing, and maintaining relations with teaching faculty. Promotes use of special collections by the US Air Force Academy in programs that support exhibits, conferences, and publications. Develops, expands, and enhances current collections through judicious selection of purchases or gifts/donated materials. Coordinates with appropriate USAFA personnel to ensure historically important records are deposited with the archive to collect and preserve records. Works with Academy public relations agencies to provide services as needed. Works closely with the Friends of the Air Force Academy Library as the designated liaison. Leads or coordinates with other library staff or Academy entities to design and mount virtual or physical exhibits that support the US Air Force Academy mission.

    5. Exercises supervisory personnel management responsibilities including setting expectations for work, prioritization of tasks, identifying applicable training opportunities, conducing performance reviews of direct reports, and furthering employee development. Engenders a positive work environment for direct reports and/or temporary employees.
