Duties

Help

This position is located within the Department of the Interior, Office of the Secretary, Indian Arts and Crafts Board, Museum of the Plains Indian Browning, Montana. The Indian Arts and Crafts Board's (IACB) mission is to promote the economic development of American Indians, Indian tribes, and Alaska Natives (Indians) through the promotion of Indian arts and crafts and the expansion and protection of the market for the products of Indian art and craftsmanship pursuant to the IACB's statutory authorities.

Under the immediate supervision of the Curator, the incumbent carries out assigned duties in connection with the care of the Museum's permanent collections and assigned physical space.

NOTE: A valid and current State Driver's License is required.

NOTE: Weekend work is required during the months of June to September.

At the full performance level (GS-04) the major duties of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Assists Curator in the design and installation of displays of the MPI's special one-person exhibition series for their proper presentation. Ensure that all titles, texts, labels, photos, diagrams, and other graphics are compiled and produced in accordance with established standard and schedules.
  2. When necessary, responsible for a) the building of props and pedestals, b) the painting of ceilings and walls of galleries and interior and exterior exhibit cases according to exhibit installation plans, c) the moving of exhibit cases, equipment, works of art, d) the handling of Plexiglas exhibit case fronts and special exhibition structures requiring glass for paintings, e) handling of paintings, f) the installation of works of art, and g) the accomplishment of any other necessary preparatory duties as needed.
  3. Responsible for the daily maintenance and physical care of specified exhibit areas, offices, workrooms, and storage areas of the Museum.
  4. Assists in receiving materials coming into the museum and in sending materials from the museum; assumes responsibility for the security and safe handling of the packing and unpacking of arts and crafts objects and other materials; arranges this material for inspection, recording and cataloging by the Curator
  5. Assists the Curator with outreach activities related to the promotion of the MPI and IACB.
  6. Assists the Curator and/or Museum Technician with regular administrative tasks of the museum including maintaining supplies and materials and requisition of items as instructed. Checks and responds to emails the from the museum's public account. Operates a government vehicle to obtain mail and supplies.
This is a TEMPORARY appointment Not To Exceed (NTE) ONE year with the possibility for extension for up to a total of 22 months for which all qualified applicants with or without Federal status may apply and be considered. Appointments to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed (NTE) 22 months.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work requires physical exertion when participating in repair and maintenance work or when assisting with the installation of museum exhibitions which involve bending, stooping, or lifting moderately heavy items such as paintings or sculptures. Use of ladder is required.

WORK ENVIROMENT
The work is performed in the Museum gallery, exhibition areas, office workrooms which may involve safety risk such as use of power tools and other equipment as well as typical risk and possible discomforts which characterize public and private work spaces. It is expected that the incumbent will exercise common sense in executing a variety of duties with minimum amount of risk-taking or unsafe work practices in using equipment, driving a Government-owned or leased vehicle, etc.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

To qualify for this position, you must meet the General Experience, Education, or a Combination of the two for the grade to which you are applying.

GS04

General Experience: One full year of general experience using the tools, techniques, procedures, or methods related to the operation of a museum or similar collection, or to the handling, storage, care, protection, or recordkeeping of such a collection. Experience may have been gained in a museum, college or university, antique shop, commercial art gallery, or other setting involving work with collections of valuable objects or specimens requiring specialized care and handling.,

Education: 2 full years of education above high school with 6 semester hours in courses related to art, history, museum studies, or other courses related to the position to be filled. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

In addition to the above requirements, applicants must possess a valid state driver's license
