Duties

Help

The Director of Student Activities:

  • Develop, coordinate, and assess a comprehensive Midshipman activities program of educational, recreational, social, and cultural programs which appeal to a diverse audience at the Academy and in the community.
  • Recruit and provide leadership for a diverse Midshipmen Council. Design and implement leadership development programs/classes to assist Midshipmen leaders in gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform leadership functions.
  • Represent and advocate for the Regimental Activities Program within the Academy's administrative and governance structure and promotes an environment that is responsive to Midshipman needs. Facilitate collaboration, innovation, and creativity among Midshipmen, faculty, staff, and administration.
  • Supervise a program responsible for enhancing a positive campus culture to include allocating an appropriate budget for Midshipmen life, leadership development, and cultural programs.

The ideal candidate is a highly motivated professional possessing integrity, stamina, and ingenuity, and capable of adjusting to various work environments, physical demands, and schedules. The individual must be customer service oriented, with unique skills to plan, organize and supervise an overall program of social activities for a residential college/university campus or military installation., that contribute to proper behavior and social skill development that are necessary for the growth of future officers.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.
  • SUPERVISORY PROBATIONARY PERIOD: You must complete a one-year supervisory probationary period (unless already completed).
  • TIME-IN-GRADE: Federal applicants must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade to satisfy time-in-grade restrictions contained in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F.
  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet either the education or specialized experience requirements.

To qualify for the GS-11 on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-09 it must include:

  • Experience managing a program of social activities for a residential college/university, that encourages and aids students in the development of social, cultural, civic, intellectual and recreational programs that expand the level of student involvement within the campus community and society, and contribute to proper behavior and social skill development.

To qualify for the GS-11 on Education alone, you must have:

  • 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
  • You can also qualify based on a combination of higher level graduate education and experience. This must be fully supported by your resume and transcripts, provided with your application.

Highly Desirable: 

Relevant experience in a regimental setting at a Maritime and/or other military/service Academy.

Experience working in a Higher Education environment that emphasizes the commitment to:

  • a comprehensive student development program that encourages student involvement;
  • participation and leadership that emphasizes positive to co-curricular involvement opportunities;
  • assessing the interests and needs of a student body relative to co-curricular involvement opportunities and programs;
  • encourage students and their organizations to explore self-directed activities that provide opportunities for self-realization and personal growth.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  • Program Management: Responsible for the development and implementation of a student activities program that encourages student participation/ involvement in extracurricular activities.
  • Technical: Designs and implements leadership development programs/classes to assist Midshipmen leaders in gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform leadership functions.
  • Supervisory/Leadership: Recruits and provides leadership for a diverse Midshipmen Council.  Oversees a program accountable for enhancing a positive campus culture by allocating an appropriated budget for Midshipman life, leadership development, and cultural programs.
  • Communication: Promotes effective relationships between departments, campus units, and external communities.
