Duties

Help

As a Public Affairs Specialist at the GS-1035-13 level, some of your typical work assignments may include:

  • Writes a variety of communications products, such as news releases, media advisories, talking points, feature articles, pamphlets, fact sheets, and responses to queries.
  • Reviews and contributes to the development and production of written, oral, and visual materials used by the USMS Office of Public Affairs, senior leadership, and district personnel.
  • Work with USMS personnel and media representatives to pitch and develop feature stories that highlight USMS missions and operations.
  • Establishes and maintains working relationships with news and entertainment media representatives, other federal law enforcement public affairs staff, law enforcement organizations, and public interest groups.
  • Respond to requests for information from the media or recommend/assist an appropriate spokesperson or information source (subject matter expert).

Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Background Investigation.

May be required to successfully complete a trial/probationary period.

Status candidates must meet time-in-grade requirements (52 weeks at the next lower grade level).

Qualifications

GS-13 TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-12 grade level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-13 grade level. (Must submit your SF-50 that shows Time-in-Grade eligibility and reflects your title, series, and grade. No award SF-50 will be accepted).

You may qualify at the GS-1035-13 level, if you fulfill the following qualifications:

Applicants must have at least one year of full-time specialized experience at or equivalent to the grade GS-12 in the Federal Service performing duties which include: 1) Addressing inquiries from news media and the general public; 2) Drafting, reviewing, and editing press releases, press statements, media pitches/proposals, and speeches on behalf of an organization; and 3) Serving as the public relations spokesperson for a law enforcement organization, public interest group, or an organization with diverse missions and activities.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience
