Summary

The Domiciliary Rehabilitation Technician is a 60-bed residential rehabilitation facility that provides extended care to Veterans with complex alcohol and drug disorders, mental health issues, and Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The Dom also treats Veterans with psychosocial issues including homelessness and unemployment. The DRT provide 7day/week, 24 hr/day coverage of the facility on a rotational basis.

Help

Duties of this position are, but not limited to:

  • Maintain close contact with residents to ensure that their behavior and social adjustments are satisfactory
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining a therapeutic, professional, helping relationship with residents
  • Provide orientation to new residents by explaining Domiciliary policies/procedures, treatment expectations and goals
  • Provide individual counseling as needed, applying past experience and knowledge of problems
  • Serve as a role model for appropriate behavior to residents
  • Responsible for reporting incidents involving injury or abuse of any resident

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:00pm, 3:30pm-midnight, midnight-8:00am

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/22/2021.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-4 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience that involved the observation of and assistance in the application of techniques relating to behavior, capacities, traits, interests, and activities of either humans or, under laboratory conditions, animals. Experience may have been gained in connection with a program of research or direct services in psychology that gave a practical understanding of some of the principles, methods, and techniques of psychology needed to assist professional psychologists.
OR,
  • Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in psychology, statistics, or other directly related subjects..
OR,
  • Combination: at least 24 semester hours in any combination of subjects such as psychology, statistics, or other directly related subjects.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Preferred Competencies:
Broad knowledge of medical conditions and their treatment/care provided.
Broad knowledge of mental and psychological dysfunctional states and the treatment provided.
Broad knowledge of alcohol and drug dependence, withdrawal, overrode and the rehabilitation process.
Broad knowledge of the aging process and its effects upon resident's level of functioning.
Culturally competent form of variety of race, age, and social economic situations.
Culturally competent in military culture.
Knowledge of proper use of procedures and VA equipment used to kill bed bugs.
Knows how to operate the AED and perform basic CPR.
Knows how to operate the Breathalyzer.
Knows how to alert for equipment failure/repairs.
Utilizing the above knowledge, the incumbent assesses need for professional intervention of a specific nature, especially at time of crisis, when incumbent observes changes in a resident's functional abilities, behavior or thinking processes.
Basic knowledge of counseling methods including motivational interviewing and ability to apply them with individual residents.Knowledge of basic medical terminology for use in preparation of documentation for Veteran's medical record.
Knowledge of and skill in utilizing the computer to perform data entry into and retrieve information from VISTA.
Knowledge of Mental Health Residential Treatment Program VHA handbook 1162.02 and its future revisions.
General knowledge of sanitation methods, materials and techniques and ability to implement them to maintain a clean environment.
Knowledge of infection control methods to maintain a healthy and infection free living area.
Knowledge of fire safety, emergency and disaster procedures to provide guidance to residents.
Knowledge of safe driving techniques and ability to drive VA vehicles.

Physical Requirements: Work is carried out mostly in an office. However, incumbent regularly conducts inspections and supervises building cleanup, etc. Overall duties require occasional lifting, carrying 50+ lbs, sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, climbing ladders, kneeling, bending, stooping, twisting, pulling/pushing, simple grasping, reading above shoulder. Conditions may also include heat, cold, excess humidity, work with chemicals, dust, noise, driving a vehicle, fire manipulation.
