Summary

If selected as a Pathways Program Student Intern, you will perform duties and receive on the job training in an assigned specialty or group of specialties in Veterinary Services (VS). You will be responsible for the performance of nonprofessional duties in connection with one major animal disease control and/or eradication program such as brucellosis eradication, tuberculosis eradication, scabies eradication, poultry disease control and eradication, tick eradication, or screwworm eradication.

  • The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.
  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Visit farms, garbage feeders, and others for the purpose of inspecting livestock to detect abnormal conditions which may indicate the presence of disease.
  • Collection and submission of larvae and/or egg specimens having the possibility of being screwworms for laboratory examination.
  • Testing, dipping, and spraying of livestock in connection with an eradication program.
  • Collection and submission of ticks and mites for laboratory identification.
  • Inspecting facilities and methods used to ensure that they conform to the regulations.

  • If selected for the Daniel E. Salmon Internship, students must be enrolled for the 2021-2022 academic year.
  • Proof of enrollment/acceptance for the fall 2021 semester will be required if selected.
  • Inspection and examination work requires regular and recurring prolonged standing, walking, stooping, bending, climbing, handling and restraint of animals.
  • Work is performed under field conditions, with possible exposure to extreme heat and cold, diseases and contact with large, unruly animals capable of inflicting injury
  • Protective clothing and gear is required if working with animals infected with diseases which are communicable to humans and as part of biosecurity measures

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

ELIGIBILITY: Students who are currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis at a qualifying educational institution in a certificate, degree, or diploma program.

Applicants can qualify by meeting the EDUCATION requirements specified below.

EDUCATION:
GS-3: Completion of 1 full academic year (30 semester or 45 quarter hours) of post-high school study in agricultural subjects, biology, chemistry, or zoology.

  • An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as a minimum of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours at an accredited college or university; OR
  • A minimum of 36 weeks at an accredited business, technical, vocational, or qualifying educational institution for at least 20 classroom hours per week.

GS-4: Completion of 2 full academic years (60 semester or 90 quarter hours) of post-high school study or an associate's degree in agricultural subjects, biology, chemistry, or zoology.

What Does the Daniel E. Salmon Internship Program Offer You? Employment while attending school: A minimum of 640 hours of paid employment during the course of your Internship for Pathways work requirements. The work requirements must be completed prior to, or concurrent with, the completion of Daniel E. Salmon Internship educational requirements, to be considered for possible conversion, without further competition, to a permanent appointment with APHIS upon successful completion of degree, training, and other work requirements.

This Internship confers eligibility for a noncompetitive conversion to a permanent or term position in the competitive service contingent upon meeting all applicable Internship Program requirements and the needs of the agency. You will be considered for conversion to a permanent or term position upon the successful completion of your Internship. However, please note that eligibility for conversion does not guarantee the agency will opt for conversion. The target position for this internship is Animal Health Technician, GS-0704-05/06/07/08/09; however, in most cases, conversion will be at the GS-05 grade level.

If selected, official transcripts will be required prior to entrance on duty. Proof of enrollment or acceptance for the upcoming academic term or semester will also be required unless graduating in the current semester.

A Pathways Participant Agreement will be required if you are selected for a position. The agreement must be signed by all applicable parties prior to entrance on duty.

Student Interns must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of the appointment. Incumbents will be required to provide proof of continued enrollment and good standing each semester or grading period throughout the internship program. Failure to do so will result in termination of the appointment.
