Duties

Help

As a Marine Engineer (Assistant/Associate Professor), you will:

  • Be responsible for developing and conducting educational courses and programs within the Department of Marine Engineering at the U.S. Merchant marine Academy.
  • Be responsible for academic counseling of midshipmen, research and scholarly activities, and assuming a share of the departmental and institutional service activities.

The ideal candidate for this position is highly motivated and experienced professional who possesses a Master's Degree and a valid (current) 2nd Assistant Engineer's U.S. Coast Guard License, or higher, who is interested in educating the next generation of Marine Engineers for the U.S. Maritime Industry.

  • SCHEDULE: This position may be eligible for a flexible Maxi-Flex Schedule in conformance with Agency policies and approval of the required agreement.

Qualifications

To be qualified for this position, you must meet the education requirements and have experience teaching college level classes in the required field of study.

  • To qualify for a Marine Engineer (Assistant/Associate Professor) you must possess a minimum of 1 academic year (5 years for Associate Professor) full time or equivalent experience teaching at a college or university in Marine or Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Sea service as a licensed engineering officer, relevant engineering design experience ashore, or power-plant operator related experience may be substituted for teaching experience on a one-for-one basis.

Education

Education:  Minimum Education Requirements for this position is:

 - Assistant Professor:  Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Marine or Mechanical Engineering or a related field, including, but not limited to naval architecture, naval engineering, electrical engineering or nuclear engineering.

- Associate Professor:  Master's degree from and accredited college or university in Marine or Mechanical Engineering or a related field, including, but not limited to naval architecture, naval engineering, electrical engineering or nuclear engineering.

Licensure Requirement:

Applicants must possess a current (not expired) U.S. Coast Guard License (or equivalent credential) valid for service on United States Flag Commercial Ships as a 2nd Assistant Engineer, Unlimited Horsepower. A valid Certificate under the provisions of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978, as currently amended, in preferred.

License Substitution:

Possession of a valid Professional Engineer’s license in Marine or Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, service in the U.S. Navy as an Engineering Duty Officer (designator 14XX), qualified as a U.S. Coast Guard Naval Engineer or Marine Inspector, or possession of a Master’s Degree (for Assistant Professor) in Marine or Mechanical Engineering or a related field may be considered as an equivalent qualification to a current U.S. Coast Guard License on a case-by-case basis.
