Duties

Help
  • Use library principles, concepts, methodology, operations, and management to serve information needs of the Forest Service and other customers.
  • Investigate and evaluate software for library applications, such as cataloging, citation management, or circulation.
  • Assist and instruct patrons on the content, nature, and use of library resources.
  • Recommend suitable print and non-print media or selections for a library collection and determine those items suitable for removal from the collection.
  • Respond to reference and research questions from library customers, whether in person, via e-mail, or telephone.
  • In response to information inquires, locate and perform information searches in other research library collections.
  • Prepare specialized, annotated scientific bibliographies and guides.
  • Use diverse information sources such as databases having a specialized structure, content, and access protocols to respond to reference and research queries.
  • Resolve problems related to the delivery of library electronic resources and the operation of library technology.
  • Catalogs books, serials, and reports.
  • Prepare exhibits and brochures and participate in public relations initiatives to promote the use of the library.

Qualifications

All librarians must meet the requirements for professional education in library science or possess equivalent experience and education as shown below and at the following https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/1400/librarian-series-1410/
Applicants must meet the requirements specified in paragraphs A or B below.

  1. Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science at an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree;
OR
  1. A total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.
Due to the scientific nature of the customers served, applicants possessing a background or coursework in the following fields are preferred: physical science, biological science, or social science.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below. Experience must have demonstrated the ability to perform, supervise, or direct one or more of the functional areas of work covered by this series; to understand the concepts, theories, new developments, and co-relationship of information in related fields; and to maintain up-to-date information on the state of the art.

GS-12:
At least 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in Federal service. Your resume must show clearly that you meet a minimum of 3 out of 4 of the following:
  • Directing overall operation of a complex, multidisciplinary scientific library;
  • Managing and training others in using and maintaining library databases using standard off-the shelf software;
  • Serving as a technical expert in database searching techniques for specialized purposes like scientific or technical research projects;
  • Performing or supervising library material acquisitions including negotiating and troubleshooting with vendor representatives.
Work Experience: Your resume must clearly document the following for each block of work experience; the beginning day, month and year the work assignment started and ended; the hours worked per week; position title, and series and grade (salary) if applicable; and description of duties performed.
