  • As a recognized technical authority, serves as a key player in driving strategic planning, analysis, implementation plans for flight hardware, research and operations products, and closure of requirements for life cycle integration and verification.
  • Primary interface for integration and coordination with various technical and management teams, discipline experts, partners with NASA HQ, JSC program/project offices, Center Directorates/Divisions, and supporting program/project contractors.
  • Issues concurrence on successful verification/certification through participation and presentation in various life cycle reviews, such as System Requirements Review (SRR), Preliminary Design Review (PDR), and Critical Design Review (CDR).
  • Directs the design, development, and production of aerospace flight systems or research products.
  • Formulates technical solutions for vehicle or research integration problems and interdivisional or interdisciplinary subsystem differences and incompatibilities.
  • Applies innovative or experimental systems engineering theories to improve systems engineering and integration processes.
  • Defines and develops systems engineering tools, methods, requirements, processes to integrate cost, schedules, and risk analyses into effective program recommendations.
  • Leads reviews of human spaceflight standards prior to release to the Office of the Chief Health and Medical Officer (OCHMO).
  • Performs technical execution of the JSC Health and Medical Technical Authority (HMTA) implementation with respect to Human Space Flight Programs.
  • Represents HMTA and the Directorate at Program level boards, panels, and other technical meetings to share information and identify/resolve issues in the human system domains.
  • Contributes to Quarterly Reports, develops informational briefings and decision packages for review by OCHMO.
  • Manages issues, deviations and waivers for unmet standards, program requirements or deliverables for specific Design Reference Missions.
  • Informs HMTA and Human Health and Performance Directorate (HHPD) management of impacts to Human Rating and Certification of Flight Readiness.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic education requirement (shown below), you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level utilizing expert level knowledge working with the application of theories, principles, practices and techniques in support of Human System Integration and its implementation into spaceflight systems; life-support, thermal, EVA, habitation, crew equipment, surface mobility, communications, instrumentation, and test support systems; systems engineering, project management, risk management and budgetary principals; experience communicating effectively with professional and non-professional personnel at all technical and managerial levels in both oral and written forms.

Code 770 Management: Any field of engineering, physical science, life science or mathematics related to the program or project. The major must include or be supplemented by 12 semester hours (or the equivalent) in physical science or engineering courses and by mathematics through and including the integral calculus level.

Education

You must have successfully completed a bachelor's or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, or other field of physical science.
*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.
