Duties

Help
  • Performs technical assignments consisting of routine laboratory and/or field experiments that require the use of accepted, standardized laboratory or field practices.
  • Assists in the acquisition of field data by measuring and recording pertinent biological information peculiar to the specific assignment.
  • Establishes routine laboratory and greenhouse studies following accepted procedures and planned statistical designs, collects and records study data, and applies treatments under controlled laboratory conditions
  • Assist higher grade employees in setting up and operating standard equipment used in performing laboratory tests and making scientific measurements and observations of sample materials gathered from experimental field plots.
  • Performs routine and repetitious laboratory tests and operations such as preparation of culture media, transfer of stock fungi cultures, maintenance of culture and isolation records, determination of moisture content.
  • Operates a variety of scientific and laboratory instruments, apparatus, and office machines. This may include dissecting and compound microscopes, environmental chambers, balances, and calculating and adding machines.
  • Observes and records expected responses in experiments and keeps aware of factors and situations included in experiments to ensure against error and to increase the reliability of the results obtained.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.

GS-04: (6) six months of general experience and (6) six months of specialized experience, equivalent to at least a GS-03 grade level.

General Experience is defined as: Performing farm/ranch labor, such as tending crops or general maintenance of plants and vegetation; working in a greenhouse, nursery or landscape business tending plants and performing general labor tasks; or other work experience, paid or unpaid, that demonstrates an ability to learn and perform the work of this position. -AND

Specialized Experience is defined as: Participating in biological-related projects by assisting with measurements, recording observations, and assisting with the collection of biological and vegetation specimens.-OR

Successful completion of 2 years of study above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses in scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the position to be filled. -OR

A combination of education and experience listed above.
