Help

Duties include but may not be limited to the following:

Receives/Interprets Request for Procedures:

  • Receives requests or instructions for procedures.
  • Interprets requests or instructions for medical or health care personnel.
  • Performs scrub technician in charge of office.
  • Receives assignments for a variety of difficult surgeries.
  • Handles instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures such as open heart, thoracic major vascular, neurosurgery, microsurgery, and total joint replacement surgery.
Secures Patients' Confidence/Cooperation:
  • Secures patients' confidence and cooperation during procedures.
  • Explains procedures, positions patients for desired results, and cushions and shields patients as appropriate.
  • Administers drugs under close control
  • Answers patient's questions during procedures.
Sets Up Sterile Field/Equipment, Determines Technician Factors, and Sets Controls:
  • Sets up the sterile field with all required items for each procedure such as air powered equipment, fiber optic equipment, laparoscopic equipment, microscopes, lasers, arthroscopy equipment, urologic equipment, recording devices, and other operating room supplies and equipment.
Maintains Control Records and documents Test Results:
  • Performs administrative tasks such as maintaining control records for specimens and tests and documenting measurements taken.
  • Manages medical support functions for clinic or practice.
  • Collects and organizes statistical data for regular and one-time reports.
Performs Health Care Procedures:
  • Performs patient care Procedures such a collection of specimens.
  • Applies dressings, adjusting simple supportive equipment.
  • Performs difficult measurements or tests on patients.
  • Takes tissue cultures or specimen samples which require difficult specialized procedures.

Qualifications

This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). Selective Placement Factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. Applicants who do not meet it are ineligible for further consideration.
The Selective Placement Factor for this position is: "Having experience scrubbing in at least one of the following areas: General Surgery, Urology, Orthopedic, Neuro Surgery, Peripheral Vascular, ENT Surgical Cases, or Cardiac Scrubbing."
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-6 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: having knowledge of technical medical instruments, human anatomy, physiology, and aseptic technique to prepare and protect a sterile field during surgery; understanding of pathology care and handling of specimens correctly; utilizing proper patient positioning skill to position the patient, depending on the type of procedure; handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures to include open heart, thoracic, major vascular, neurosurgery, microsurgery, and total joint replacement; and selecting the correct instruments for a procedure, anticipating the needs of the surgeon during the procedure, and recognizing and responding to a variety of critical situations appropriately.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Successful completion of one (1) year of graduate level education that is directly related to the work of the position to be filled. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, eighteen (18) semester hours will be considered an academic year of graduate study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. (Transcript Required) Transcripts must be submitted with application. Education cannot be credited without documentation.

COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Having equivalent combinations of specialized experience and successfully completed graduate education as described above to meet the total experience requirements to qualify for this position at the GS-7 grade level. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily standing and walking but also requires bending, lifting, and carrying of heavy items. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. The work may require heavy lifting of equipment or patients.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
