Duties

Help

You will serve as a Library Technician responsible for providing technical services support functions required to support the education and training outcomes of the Academy.


Being a CG civilian makes you a valuable member of the CG team. Typical work assignments include: 

- Performing all copy cataloging using OCLC Connexion. Maintaining catalog database, including processes associated with acquisition and weeding of materials.

- Providing archival processing assistance: inventorying incoming collections in a variety of formats, data entry, rehousing archival materials, digitizing archival assets, physically shifting collections, exhibits research, and other special projects as needed. Supports digital initiatives including digitizing materials; creating metadata for digital assets; and adding, deleting, and maintaining records in repositories.

- Supporting acquisition processes including creating PRs, receiving materials, and creating book orders.

- Collecting pertinent statistics for reports; creating brochures, bookmarks, signs, etc; working on displays; shelf reading; shifting collections; inventory; serials binding; overseeing student clerks or volunteers

- Staffing circulation desk; answering directional questions; giving library tours

Qualifications

Candidates at the GS-6 level must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in the federal service. Examples of specialized experience include: preparing materials for conversion into various mediums; using automated tools to assist customers with requests for materials; assisting customers with automated equipment or other research tools; performing database searches, maintenance, and indexing; assisting in updates to library collections; performing cataloging functions; and providing reference services to customers. Typically education is not creditable above the GS-5 level for most positions, however, candidates at the GS-6 level may meet the qualification requirements of the position if they possess at least 1/2 year of appropriate graduate level education in a field of study directly related to the work of the position to be filled. Candidates at the GS-6 level may also meet the qualification requirements of the position through a combination of appropriate specialized experience and appropriate graduate level education that together meet the qualification requirements for the position to be filled.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

The necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities to perform this job are:

* In depth knowledge of the Library of Congress classification system, MARC records, OCLC Connexion, cataloging standards, and copy cataloging procedures

* In depth knowledge of an integrated library system and the cataloging functions and working with archival, historical or other materials.

* Knowledge of library routines as they relate to copy cataloging scanning, creation of metadata, and acquisition of material.

* Knowledge of government procurement regulations.

* Demonstrated ability with automated systems and computers, especially word processing and database use. Demonstrated ability with MS Word, Excel, Access, or similar PC-based word processing, spreadsheet, and database management programs.
