Help
  • Review policies to ensure accuracy and consistency with legislation, regulations, statutes, and laws.
  • Assist in the coordination, planning, development, and management of agency correspondence.

ALL PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET BY THE CLOSING DATE OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT:

To be eligible for the CMS Pathways - Summer Internship Program, an individual must be enrolled and seeking a degree (e.g., diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution/program on a full or half-time basis for the upcoming SPRING 2021 semester AND have projected enrollment for the SUMMER 2021 or FALL 2021 semester. Additional proof of enrollment for the upcoming SUMMER 2021 or FALL 2021 semester will be required before a final job offer can be extended.
Please NOTE that if you are graduating in the Spring 2021 semester, you are not eligible for the Summer Intern Program unless you are enrolled at least half time in a continuing education degree for the Summer 2021 or Fall 2021 semesters (i.e. Graduating in Spring 2021 with a Bachelor's and enrolling in a Master's Program of Summer or Fall 2021). Spring graduates are encouraged to apply to our Recent Graduate announcements.

NOTE: If your educational institution/program operates on a quarter system and Spring 2021 registration is not open at the time of application, you will need to provide proof of Spring 2021 registration upon selection.

Possess and maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher on the unweighted 4.0 scale. GPA is based on current enrollment. GPA 2.95 is rounded to 3.0 and 2.94 is rounded to 2.9. NOTE: Students enrolled in a school or college that utilizes a Pass/Fail grading system are required to submit an unofficial transcript which must include the Institutions legend that documents the Pass/Fail equivalency.

TRANSCRIPTS or other applicable education documents (e.g., acceptance letter) are required at the time of application to verify program eligibility.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • GS-04: Completion of 2 full academic years of education above high school OR an Associate's or equivalent degree. Two full academic years post high-school is defined as 60 credits for degrees that require a total of 120 semester hours or 90 quarter hours for degrees that require a total of 180 quarter hours.
  • GS-05: Completion of a Bachelor's degree, equivalent degree, OR 4 academic years of education above high school that leads to a Bachelor's degree. Four full academic years above high school is defined as 120 credits or 180 quarter hours.
  • GS-07: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. OR eligibility under Superior Academic Achievement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university AND one of the following provisions of superior academic achievement:
  • Superior Academic Achievement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university AND one of the following provisions of superior academic achievement: NOTE: If you are claiming S.A.A. you must provide an unofficial transcript at the time of application that documents this claim:
    • A grade-point average of "B" (3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale) for all completed undergraduate courses or those completed in the last two years of undergraduate study. For example, 2.95 is rounded to 3.0, and 2.94 is rounded to 2.9.
    • A grade-point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale for all required courses completed in your major field of study, or those required courses in your major completed in the last two years of your undergraduate study.
    • Rank in the upper one-third of your class in the college, university, or major subdivision.
    • Membership in a national honor society (other than freshman honor societies) recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies
TRANSCRIPTS are required at the time of application to verify satisfactory completion of education as part of the program eligibility and qualification requirements. You must submit an unofficial transcript from your Institution attesting to your possession of the required education.

Transcripts/Enrollment documents submitted at time of application MUST include:
  • Unofficial Transcripts must state the student's name, name of the school, current GPA/academic standing, past and current coursework with credits for each course, enrollment status, degree program, and proof of enrollment for the Spring 2021 semester.
  • If your school's transcripts, letter of acceptance, or other documentation does not provide all the necessary information listed above, you should include additional official academic documentation that meets the requirements.
  • If you are a graduate level student, you should also submit your undergrad transcripts with your application.
If you do not submit a transcript indicating your possession of the required education, you will not be considered for this position.

Salary Range: In accordance with 100% telework pay setting policy, summer interns will be paid locality rate based upon home address. All CMS Pathways Interns are hired at the step 1 of the grade in which they are selected. For more information about federal civilian locality pay rates, see opm.gov

  • GS-04, Step 1 rate range: $15.10 - $18.42 per hour (depending on location)
  • GS-05, Step 1 rate range: $16.90 - $20.61 per hour (depending on location)
  • GS-07, Step 1 rate range: $20.93 - $25.53 per hour (depending on location)

Benefits:
*Summer Interns hired on a short-term basis (90 days or less) are not eligible for Federal benefits, i.e. health, life, retirement.
*Appointments made in duration in excess of 90 days and for full-time are eligible for health benefits.
*All summer Interns will accrue sick leave.
Schedule: Interns are eligible to work Full-time (40 hours per week) or Part-time (16 to 32 hours per week).

  • Summer Intern appointments begin May/June 2021 and will not exceed September 19, 2021.
  • Summer Intern appointments may be extended beyond the not-to-exceed (NTE) date at the agency's discretion.
Conversion Eligibility:
  • At the agency's discretion, a Summer Intern (Temporary Intern) may be non-competitively converted to an excepted service Pathways Permanent (year-round) Intern appointment; OR
  • At the agency's discretion, a Summer Intern (Temporary Intern) may be non-competitively converted to a permanent or term position in the competitive service after all requirements for conversion have been met.
Interns who are converted to the competitive service may be placed into a position with an established career ladder with a full performance level of GS-12. Interns who are converted may be assigned a duty station in accordance with the established locations of CMS Offices, i.e. removed from 100% telework. CMS offices are located in the following cities: Woodlawn, MD; Bethesda, MD; Washington D.C.; Atlanta, GA; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Dallas, TX; Denver, CO; Kansas City, MO; New York, NY; Philadelphia, PA; San Francisco, CA; Seattle, WA; and Puerto Rico.
