Summary

This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUCEMENT and will remain open until December 31, 2021. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be January 19, 2021 with subsequent reviews on the 1st and 15th of each month as additional vacancies occur, on an as-needed basis, until positions are filled.

This position located, at the Cheyenne VA Healthcare System, is located within the Nutrition and Food Services under the direct supervision of the Food Service Worker Supervisor.

Help

This position is located in the Nutrition and Food Service (N&FS) area of the Patient Care Service Line (PCSL) at the Cheyenne VA Medical Center under the general supervision of the Service Chief. As a member of the N&FS team, the primary purpose of this position is to perform a wide variety of food service tasks in providing meal service to our Veterans. This includes a broad knowledge of food service operations pertaining to compliance with food safety and infection control guidelines, portion control, serving, delivering and/or stocking food items, washing dishes and/or cleaning as assigned. Additional duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Preparing simple uncooked food items such as gelatins, fruit juice, beverage mixes, salads, and salad dressings, sandwich spreads, and pureed desserts to name a few.
  • Utilizing standardized recipes and/or following verbal instructions.
  • Portion control.
  • Preparing standing orders for tray line, utilizing computer generated lists.
  • Setting-up cold-food station on tray line with correct supplies and food items.
  • Working cold food station during tray assembly, placing or serving one or more food items on the tray, following regular or modified diet menus and/or diet cards.
  • Identifying obvious differences between prescribed diets and food items.
  • Cleaning work area(s) and equipment during use and upon completion of assignment.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing equipment, to include but not limited to tables, food processors, and blenders.
  • Utilizing appropriate cleaning compounds in correct proportions.
  • Sorting, pre-rinsing/soaking, and scrubbing glassware, flat ware, other kitchen utensils and then racking them.
  • Loading/operating the mechanical dish machine.
  • Removing clean items from dish machine; sorts and stores sanitized items.
  • Operating a variety of small equipment, such as blenders and food processors, executing required sanitation and safety procedures, maintaining equipment to avoid injury or damage, and reporting daily wear and tear, need for repairs, or any unsafe working condition to the supervisor.
  • Utilizing Nutrition and Food Service VISTA software to generate computer lists required to accomplish cold food preparation and portioning.
  • Participating in the continuous monitoring of temperatures, patient satisfaction, tray accuracy and plate waste; statistics required for the Quality Improvement and Quality Control programs.
  • Serving on Nutrition and Food committees, such as Quality Control, Safety or Training, and/or Medical Center Committees.
Work Schedule: Nutrition and Food Services operates Sunday - Saturday. Incumbent will serve 5 days per week, 8 hours per day in one of two shifts, either 6:00 AM (MST) - 2:30 PM (MST) or 11:00 AM (MST) - 7:30 PM (MST). Schedules are set according to the needs of the Service.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen-out element(s) which usually appears as question one(1) and two(2) in the on-line assessment. Applicants who appear to possess at least the minimum acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not, are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work involves light to moderate physical effort including frequent lifting and/or moving objects weighing up to 40 lbs. This may include lifting dishes or trays while serving or clearing tables. Physical requirements also include constant standing and walking as well as frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. These tasks are performed in a kitchen where the steam and heat from cooking and dish washing equipment often result in uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. Although the area is well lit, it is unusually noisy and there is a risk of slipping on wet floors.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
