VA Western New York Health Care System (VAWNYHCS), located in Buffalo, New York, is recruiting for a Physician to work in Behavioral Health Outpatient clinics., inpatient and/or residential treatment. VAWNYHCS is a level 1B, academic, tertiary health care system, affiliated with the University at Buffalo. VAWNYHCS provides a full range of patient care services with state-of-the-art technology, plus education and research.
General Psychiatry:
Privileges includes treatment of psychiatric and substance abuse disorders. The incumbent is responsible for, but not limited to:
- Treatment of psychiatric disorders, to cover the routine practice of psychiatry, conducting a complete psychiatric evaluation (including for substance abuse), ordering any appropriate diagnostic evaluation, ordering psychopharmacological medications, providing consultation and liaison services, and performing individual psychotherapy.
- Medical Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Treatment, to include the medical evaluation and treatment in an alcoholism rehabilitation program of conditions commonly associated with alcoholism (e.g. liver disease and central nervous system dysfunction), utilizing consultants when appropriate. This privilege includes ordering psychopharmacological medications, providing consultation and individual and group counseling.
- Other necessary duties as assigned by the Chief of Psychiatry
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm with a possibility of various on call duties, which may include weekdays, weekends and holidays. Work schedule is subject to change based on the needs of the facility. Virtual: Opportunity

Qualifications
Note: Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: Ideal candidates will be board certified, board certified or board eligible candidates are preferred
Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - This position may be eligible for EDRP, a student loan reimbursement program. Please consult with the Human Resources point-of-contact listed in the "How to apply" section of this job announcement to verify EDRP eligibility. If selected for this position you must submit your application within four months of appointment. The final award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment services Office.
The Specialty Education Loan Repayment Program (SELRP) provides financial assistance to physicians in the form of a loan repayment to recent graduates of an accredited medical or osteopathic school, and are currently enrolled or matched to a residency identified as a shortage by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The loan repayment is $40,000 a year with a maximum of $160,000. In return the recipient would agree to serve in a clinical practice at a VA facility for a period of 12 months for each $40,000 of loan repayment with a minimum of 24 months of obligated service.
