Duties

Help

This position is located in the Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General, Office of Audit. The Inspector General, by law, has the duty and responsibility to provide policy direction for and to conduct, supervise, and coordinate audits and investigations relating to the programs and operations of the Department of Labor. Such audits are to contribute to the prevention and detection of fraud, abuse, and illegal expenditures and acts in Federally‑funded programs. The Inspector General Act requires audits to meet the standards established by the Comptroller General of the United States for audits of Federal, state, and local governmental organizations, programs, activities, and functions.

This position serves as an IT Specialist, providing program, technical and administrative support to the Director of IT Audit.  Under the supervision of the project supervisor or the Director of IT Audit assists with conducting IT assignments including audits, evaluations, reviews, assessments and evaluations of the Department of Labor’s IT systems and IT security programs. 

In addition, performs the following work assignments:

Reviews information security related activities for adherence to agency policies and procedures that support Department of Labor’s IT systems. Assists in conducting security risk and vulnerability assessments applying knowledge and technical skills to ensure tests are properly conducted.

Reviews current information security policies, procedures and processes to determine that controls are consistent with federal government, Department of Labor and OIG mission and guidelines. Utilizes information security skills acquired through both education and experience to assesses IT operational and technical controls for adherence to required IT laws, regulations and policies and refers any irregularities to project manager.

Provides support and assistance to others developing the annual audit work plan based on knowledge and experience of information security issues that are relevant to the Department of Labor. Provides assistance in drafting audit programs including researching and analyzing a wide variety of IT Infrastructure and information security issues for the supervisor.

Appointee must be a U.S. citizen in order to be eligible for conversion to a permanent position in the competitive service upon completion of the program. Upon successful completion of the program and at the agency's discretion, the appointee may be converted to a term or permanent position in the competitive service.

To qualify at the GS-09, your resume must describe at least one year of experience that demonstrates the competencies necessary for immediate success in the position. Experience refers to any paid or unpaid experience, including volunteer work and Military service, that would be considered equivalent to work normally performed at the next lower grade level, GS-07 in the federal service.

Specialized experience includes but is not limited to:

1) Working with common programming languages and applications, including web-based and databases to develop or modify applications; 2) Assisting in performing system administration duties such as modifying or maintaining user accounts, networks or systems 3) Performing data analysis or preparing data for use in data analysis by others or 4) Assisting with the aspects of implementing or reviewing information security in systems or networks.

Education

For the GS-09 position, master's degree or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree.

To be eligible for appointment, you must meet requirement a or b:

a. Completed all requirements for an associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational, or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution within the previous two years; or

b. Was released or discharged from active duty within the previous two years, where the applicant is a veteran who, due to a military service obligation, was precluded from applying for a recent graduate position during any portion of the two-year eligibility period following completion of his/her degree or certificate requirements, provided that not more than six years have transpired since the applicant completed the requirements for a degree or certificate You must submit an academic transcript from your academic institution showing the date that you most recently completed the academic requirements described above.
