Duties

Help
  • Investigate research objectives relevant to the overall goals of the laboratory.
  • Discuss the scope and objectives of the research project with the research scientist.
  • Develop?research objectives based upon working models formulated by the incumbent as a result of personal work experience, scientific knowledge, and review of the literature.
  • Determine problems or deficiencies in methodology or protocols and take?appropriate corrective action.
  • Determine?the time and resources required to perform the experiments and participate?in the establishment of plans and schedules.
  • Select?and order?the specific kind and number of animals, media, buffers, reagents, tissue samples, and other materials required.
  • Set?up the laboratory, assuring that instrumentation to be used is in working order and is properly calibrated.
  • Provide?advice and consultation for Institute personnel regarding methods and techniques.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Biologist, GS-401 position you must meet the following Education Requirements:

A. have completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university; OR

B. have a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND have appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.

Additionally, in order to qualify at the GS-12 level, you must:
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: carrying out research and immunological assessment on isolated cells using a variety of technologies, including flow cytometry with intracellular staining; calibrating laboratory equipment, isolating specific cell populations from various tissues including spleen, lymph nodes, lung, or other epithelial tissues using flow cytometric sorting; and conducting routine processing of infectious material from rodents and humans including complex immunological assays of lymphocyte function and developing research objectives based upon working models.

  • This position is designated as an "emergency essential" position and the selected candidate will be considered an "emergency essential" employee and will be required to be available, ready, willing, and able to report for duty under all circumstances (e.g., inclement weather, government closings and holidays, lapses in appropriations, non-emergency and emergency situations) for operation 24 hours a day and 365 days per year coverage.
  • This is a term appointment. This appointment is not permanent. If selected, your initial appointment may be any length of time between 13 months and 4-years. We may exercise the option of extending a term appointment up to the 4-year limit, but any extension is not guaranteed. Only the Office of Personnel Management may authorize a 1-year extension beyond the 4th year. After the expiration date of your appointment, you will be separated from service even if you have competitive status as a prior permanent federal employee.
