Summary

The position is with the National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC), Fort Collins, CO. The position will be based in Fort Collins, CO. The position is under the Wildlife Disease Dynamics, Epidemiology, and Response Project which is responsible for conducting research on pathogens that can be harbored wildlife. The coordination of the incumbent's activities will be the responsibility of a Research Wildlife Biologist. This is an APHIS Science Fellows Program position.

Duties

  • The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.
  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Major involvement with the Wildlife Disease Dynamics, Epidemiology, and Response Research Project and will work closely with collaborators from Colorado State University in CSU BSL-3 animal facilities and laboratories.
  • Understand the host susceptibility of high priority pathogens in wildlife. The goal of this project will be to assess the ability of various wildlife species to replicate and/or transmit viruses.
  • Capture and husbandry of various wildlife species, safely handling wildlife, sampling wildlife, conducting various lab assays to evaluate viral shedding and seroconversion, and producing manuscripts.
  • Responsible for obtaining serum samples from multiple biological archives for serological analyses. Responsible for conducting laboratory assays on additional biological samples as directed.
  • Collaborating with researchers from Colorado State University; preparing protocols for relevant studies; receiving and maintaining Tier-1 select Agent clearance and required medical clearances
  • Collaboration with researchers from Colorado State University, the incumbent will conduct experimental infection and transmission studies on priority pathogens in wildlife, such as SARS-CoV-2
  • With minimal supervision, comply with Animal Welfare Act, Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and applicable state and federal wildlife laws and regulations.
  • Occasionally provides technical direction to temporary employees, volunteers, students, etc., particularly when conducting laboratory studies, etc., particularly when conducting laboratory studies
  • Prepare brief technical reports describing study progress and contribute to technical publications describing experimental procedures and results.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
BASIC REQUIREMENT: Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to the position

OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the basic requirement applicants must also possess:

FOR THE GS-12 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-11 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:

  • Demonstrated experience in designing, conducting, and leading scientific experiments with wildlife and to publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience working with wildlife in BSL-3 laboratories and ABSL-3 animal room
  • Ability to perform, troubleshoot, and optimize common virological laboratory assays (e.g., RT-PCR, Plaque assays, ELISA, plaque reduction neutralization tests, etc.) and to adapt these assays to wildlife studies
  • Demonstrated experience with the capture, husbandry, immobilization, and safe handling of mammalian wildlife
  • Ability to qualify for and maintain a tier-1 select agent clearance.

There is no education substitution for this grade.

TRANSCRIPTS are required if:
  • This position requires specific coursework or a degree in a specific field to be basically qualified.
  • This education must have been successfully completed and obtained from an accredited school, college, or university

  • This position is eligible for telework within the local commuting area of the duty location of the position. Employee participation is at the discretion of the supervisor.
