Duties

Help

As a Biologist within the Alaska Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Participates in the planning and execution of complex studies and investigations concerning biological, chemical, and physical processes that affect ecosystems.
  • Performs data analysis and writes reports to evaluate findings.
  • Plans, organizes, and implements limited biological investigations that affect wildlife and/or fishery resources and their habitat conditions.
  • Recommends minor modifications to program objectives, conducts limited program analyses, and reviews results of small studies or investigations.
  • Gathers, organizes, and interprets a wide variety of biological, ecological, pathological, public use data or other information pertinent to scientific studies or investigations.
Note: The above duties are for the GS-09 level. For the lower grade level, incumbent will perform a wide range of tasks described in the above duties, but at a lower level of work designed to further develop and refine the knowledge and skills of the incumbent. Assignments will typically combine productive work with on-going training and instruction. Supervision received at the lower level will be closer with oversight and review being provided more frequently.

Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. The work requires moderate physical ability and average agility and dexterity.

Work Environment: Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and/or in the field. The office is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted.

CREWMEMBER DUTIES:

Physical Demands: The selectee must be physically capable of performing duties safely and efficiently while onboard large vessels. Crewmember duties on large vessels are physically demanding, and can be arduous and/or hazardous in nature.

Field Work: Employee may participate on scientific cruises on large research vessels. As part of the employee's job function as a Crewmember, duties are performed and/or may be performed that are operational and safety-sensitive in nature. May be required to:

(a) Maintain a 'bridge-watch' as directed by the Captain/USCG licensed operator.

(b) Perform general vessel maintenance while aboard to help ensure safe working spaces and pollution prevention.

(c) Operate deck machinery including winches, windlasses, A-Frames, lifting equipment, lifesaving equipment and apparatus, fire-fighting systems and apparatus.

(d) Deploy, recover, assemble and disassemble 'fishing -tows' or other types of biological sampling equipment, oceanographic equipment, and other marine survey equipment.

(e) Perform mooring, anchoring, and line handling duties.

(f) Load and off-load scientific equipment and other cargo.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
  • This position is subject to both pre-employment and random drug testing as a condition of employment. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test is received.
  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.

A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. FOR GS-07:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-07 level:

1 year of successfully completed graduate level education (18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) in biology or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

**OR one year of appropriate professional experience that is in or related to the duties of this position is qualifying if it is equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. Examples of GS-5 level experience could include: making laboratory determinations of water quality parameters on biological samples; applying biological concepts and basic principles in related natural science fields; collecting basic field investigation data; preparing and operating equipment that collects samples and biologic data; preparing samples; and analyzing, compiling and computing biological data. The tasks performed at this level were routine and usually entailed readily identifiable phenomena and environmental conditions; and the work was closely controlled and assigned with clear, specific, and detailed instructions as to the methods, procedures, and guidelines to use.

FOR GS-09:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:

**Master's or equivalent graduate degree in biology or other directly related field of study or 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or other related disciplines if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

**OR one year of appropriate professional experience in biology that is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service. Examples of GS-07 level work may include: 1) assisting with planning, organizing, and implementing scientific investigations; 2) performing data analyses on portions of larger scientific investigations; 3) and receiving training in gathering, organizing, and interpreting biological, ecological, pathological, public use, or other information pertinent to scientific studies and/or scientific investigations. For examples 1-3, the work involved following established methods and procedures, or detailed instructions; using some judgment in applying basic principles and procedures; solving minor problems and making routine decisions.
