This position is located at the Northern Arizona VA Health Care System (NAV AHCS) located in Prescott, AZ. This position is part of Maintenance and Operation Section of Facilities Management Service. The primary purpose of the Maintenance Supervisor is to supervise, direct building maintenance, repairs and installations covered by the Maintenance Unit throughout the medical center.

Help

Duties to include but not limited to:
  • Responsible for buildings and associated systems, including preventative maintenance, repairs, installations, alterations, and renovations covered by the Maintenance Unit, which is comprised of the following trade shops: Electronics Mechanic, Electrician, A!C Mechanic, Maintenance Mechanic and Maintenance Worker.
  • Supervises temporary employees, upward mobility trainees or non-employee special program individuals such as incentive therapy, work study or summer students.
  • Takes positive action to implement affirmative action/EEO initiatives identified in the installation Affirmative Employment Plan.
  • Plan daily, weekly and monthly work schedules to be accomplished by shops supervised and provides for effective use of employees time in terms of workload and completion dates.
  • Prepare cost estimates for repairs, maintenance and station level projects pertaining to the unit. Serve as a Contracting Officer Representative (COR) and prepare documents and specifications required for contracted services and projects related to the assigned shops.
  • Coordinate work of the unit with that of other units Prescribe methods and procedures and sets standards of quantity and quality of work to be met.
  • Initiate action to assure material and equipment is ordered and delivered to unit. Suggest revisions to workload that can result in cost reduction.
  • Promote and administer a variety of management programs, including safety and fire protection, disaster preparedness, energy management, incentive awards and suggestions, cost reduction, equal opportunity and quality assurance. Adjust informal complaints and grievances through discussion with employees and Union representatives, and initiates disciplinary actions.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Must be physically able in body to direct the accomplishment of the above work. He/she must be capable of standing, bending, climbing ladders and scaffolds, and in general have use of his/her limbs. He/she must visit all those areas where subordinates will be working for the purpose of instruction and/or inspection.
Work involves frequent walking, standing and sedentary desk work. Occasionally requires stooping, bending, working on ladders or scaffolds, or working in cramped or awkward positions. He/she is subject to hazardous conditions, working under extreme temperatures, hot and cold; and in inclement weather. He/she must be aware of this and be able to cope with same. He/she may be exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruised and broken bones. He/she may also be exposed to contagious disease when working in patient areas. Safety procedures must be followed and appropriate protective safe gear must be worn, as required for the specific work area or task.
